It’s not even a month since Drew McIntyre‘s last appearance in WWE, and the fans are already missing the loudmouth that the Scot is. He recently posted a picture on X from this past week’s SmackDown. As one can see below, CM Punk is holding the Undisputed WWE title. But that’s not what the Ayr-born wrestler was insinuating.

In fact, McIntyre wanted to highlight a fan signboard that was directly behind Punk and read as “DM HUNK WE MISS YOU.” For the unversed, it’s the same nickname that the Scot coined for himself when he was feuding with ‘The Second City Saint.’ In essence, McIntyre is playing into the hype of his WWE absence starting to bother a number of fans.

He was last seen at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he lost a steel cage match to Damian Priest. It marked an end to their long-standing rivalry. After the show, it was reported that the 40-year-old would be going on an extended leave of absence from WWE to cater to some personal business. In addition to that, the former WWE Champion had been working through some minor injuries, which might’ve also played a part in convincing the Scot to step away for a bit.

Apart from letting the people know that he’s aware of their sentiments about himself, McIntyre’s aforementioned post might also suggest that he hasn’t forgotten about Punk. They were embroiled in one of the most heated rivalries of the modern era, and it capped off in a gruesome bloodbath inside Hell in a Cell in October 2024.

Drew McIntyre’s world title woes ached him for the entirety of 2024

The only thing that has eluded Drew McIntyre in his illustrious WWE career is a significant world title reign. While he’s indeed a three-time world champion, two of those reigns came at a time when the entire world was fighting with the COVID-19 pandemic. McIntyre was carrying the WWE Championship on his shoulders in empty arenas with no actual fans to add to his motivation.

Last year at WrestleMania XL, the Scotsman dethroned Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship. However, it could only last 5 minutes and 46 seconds, as McIntyre got cashed in on by the then-Mr. Money in the Bank, Damian Priest. It happened moments after the Scot had been beaten up by CM Punk, who was provoked by ‘The Chosen One’ himself to do so.

McIntyre would go on to unsuccessfully challenge Priest for the title belt in the following months. In fact, it seemed as if he’d surely beat ‘The Archer of Infamy’ when he became last year’s Mr. Money in the Bank. However, at the said PLE, ‘The Best in the World’ cost his nemesis the opportunity to cash in. Priest rolled McIntyre up to retain the gold, thanks to Punk’s interference.

Who could Drew McIntyre target after returning to WWE?

At this point in time, there’s no update on Drew McIntyre’s WWE return. His fans would hope to see him back in time for SummerSlam. There’s a big-time matchup for ‘The Scottish Psychopath’ awaiting in the form of John Cena.

After dispatching Damian Priest at WrestleMania 41, McIntyre was ready to go after The Cenation Leader, but Randy Orton jumped the gun, and the Scot wasn’t happy about it. But with Cena merely left with half of his ongoing retirement tour, he might never cross paths with the Scot if the latter doesn’t return soon enough.

They had the chance to go after each other inside the Elimination Chamber this year, but McIntyre was eliminated so early that they couldn’t even come face-to-face once. In the lead-up to that match, McIntyre mocked Cena on social media for leveraging his seniority without even having to qualify for the match.
