It is safe to say Drew McIntyre and world title matches share a complicated history. Despite being a multi-time champion, the Scotsman’s recent clashes with Cody Rhodes for the WWE title have repeatedly ended in heartbreaking fashion. And this trend didn’t begin in 2025.

Ever since McIntyre faced Roman Reigns in his home country at Clash at the Castle 2022, the so-called curse has followed him. Many expected him to dethrone Reigns that night, but Solo Sikoa’s interference changed everything.

McIntyre did briefly reclaim world title glory by defeating Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40, only to lose the championship five minutes later to Damian Priest, thanks to interference from CM Punk. His bad luck continued when Punk also cost him his chance to cash in his own Money in the Bank briefcase against Priest.

More recently, McIntyre has fallen short three separate times in attempts to defeat Rhodes: at Wrestlepalooza, on SmackDown, and most lately at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Noticing the pattern, fans have questioned the company’s booking and McIntyre’s direction.

And to add insult to injury, WWE’s social media team recently posted a compilation video titled ‘Drew McIntyre’s controversial world title losses.’ McIntyre quickly responded, calling out the company with a short yet sharp message on X.

The compilation highlighted several of McIntyre’s most controversial title defeats, including:

  • Elimination Chamber 2021: The Miz cashed in Money in the Bank after Bobby Lashley attacked McIntyre.
  • WrestleMania 40: Damian Priest cashed in after CM Punk blindsided McIntyre.
  • Clash at the Castle 2024: CM Punk inserted himself as referee and cost McIntyre the match against Priest.
  • Money in the Bank 2024: McIntyre’s own cash-in attempt failed after another Punk attack.
  • Wrestlepalooza 2025: Cody Rhodes retained after the referee stopped McIntyre from hitting a Claymore near the announce table.
  • Saturday Night’s Main Event: Rhodes defeated McIntyre again, this time after hitting a DDT onto the title belt.

It is obvious that McIntyre was far from happy about the video being posted, urging the company to read the room regarding what the fans want and how frustrated they are at not getting it.

Whether his rivalry with Rhodes is truly over remains uncertain, especially after McIntyre recently shared a gym photo on Instagram paired with a motivational message about pushing forward. For now, fans can only wait and see what the future holds for the former world title holder.

New reports on Drew McIntyre’s WWE contract situation come to light

In the opening match of Saturday Night’s Main Event, Drew McIntyre once again came up short in his pursuit of the Undisputed WWE Championship. With the referee down, McIntyre seized the moment and attempted to strike Cody Rhodes with the title belt.

Rhodes narrowly avoided the blow and countered with a DDT onto the belt, sealing the victory. The champion capped off the win with a sinister grin, offering fans a rare look at his darker edge. Amid the disappointment, new details have surfaced regarding McIntyre’s WWE contract.

The Scotsman re-signed with the company in April 2024 on a major multi-year deal, an announcement that The Rock personally delivered on Instagram, even gifting McIntyre a custom Claymore sword to mark the occasion.

According to Fightful Select, McIntyre’s contract runs through at least 2028 and could extend to WrestleMania 44 if the company picks up the additional option. While the exact length wasn’t confirmed, sources hinted it is a four-year deal with roughly two and a half years remaining. The deal is reportedly worth several million dollars annually.

Meanwhile, The Economic Times also noted that McIntyre’s annual salary sits around $8 million, placing him among the top earners in the company. The lucrative contract was seen as a reward for his leadership and visibility during the pandemic era, when he led the company as its top champion during the fanless Thunderdome era.
