Drew McIntyre‘s quest to reclaim the WWE Championship got reignited on this week’s SmackDown. He teamed up with Logan Paul to battle John Cena and Cody Rhodes in an all-star tag team showdown. It ended in a disqualification with ‘The Maverick’ going low on Cena. Meanwhile, Rhodes was trading blows with McIntyre at the ringside.

‘The American Nightmare’ seemed to be in cruise control and was clearing up the commentary table to outmaneuver the Scot. However, Rhodes wasted a little too much time basking in the admiration of the Montreal crowd. It cost him dearly as McIntyre clocked the champ’s skull with the WWE title belt. He then followed it up by connecting Rhodes with a Claymore kick through the announcer’s desk.

That spot looked absolutely brutal on camera, and it prompted a noticeable gasp from the fans in attendance. The closing shot of SmackDown had clearly established that McIntyre will give Rhodes a run for his money in the feud they are about to have. A while ago, the Ayr-born wrestler told the erstwhile AEW EVP to his face that he would be coming after him should he beat Cena for the title at SummerSlam.

Rhodes didn’t disappoint McIntyre, as he went on to dethrone ‘The Franchise Player’ to put an end to the latter’s historic 17th world title reign that began at this year’s WrestleMania. ‘The Quarterback of WWE’ will have to thwart a certain ‘Scottish Psychopath’ to kick off his second world title reign in WWE with a bang.

Drew McIntyre issued a stern warning to Cody Rhodes after SmackDown

Drew McIntyre is no stranger to being a world champion. He’s done it thrice in WWE. While the first two of them came predominantly in the Thunderdome era with no fans in attendance, he did win the third one in front of a capacity crowd at WrestleMania XL. However, it lasted merely 5 minutes and 46 seconds, thanks to a Money in the Bank cash-in by Damian Priest.

McIntyre, ever since that point on, has tried to recapture the top prize in sports entertainment but has failed miserably. Things, however, do seem different this time around with the sort of beating he inflicted on Cody Rhodes on SmackDown. The Scot took to X afterwards and captioned, “Overlooked. Under appreciated. Ignored. No more.” In the said post, the 40-year-old could be heard firing warning shots for the late Dusty Rhodes‘ son.

‘The Scottish Psychopath’ got back to winning ways this past weekend at SummerSlam when he and Logan Paul dispatched Randy Orton and Jelly Roll. McIntyre had drawn a blank against ‘The Viper’ in their clash at Saturday Night’s Main Event. It was McIntyre’s first match since returning after a month-long hiatus. Prior to that, the former 3MB member was engrossed in a feud with Damian Priest.

How did Drew McIntyre react to Brock Lesnar’s WWE return?

Even though Drew McIntyre has a lot on his plate right now, he cared to lend his thoughts on Brock Lesnar‘s shocking WWE return at SummerSlam. ‘The Beast’ dropped many jaws by emerging at the tail end of the PLE and ended up attacking John Cena with an F-5. What did McIntyre think of it?

In a nutshell, he didn’t think anything crazy about Lesnar’s re-emergence on WWE programming for the first time since August 2023. McIntyre said he’d just landed home in Nashville by the time it unfolded. Without going into any of the legal trouble Lesnar’s currently in, McIntyre affirmed that he generates a ton of buzz whenever he’s around.

‘The Scotsman’ mentioned that ‘The Conqueror’ is someone he beat in five minutes at WrestleMania 36. That earned McIntyre his first-ever world title in WWE. What a shame it had to be held behind closed doors. But that victory cemented the Scot as a major star whom the top brass could trust to carry the company forward.
