Last weekend at UFC 319, Dricus Du Plessis fought Khamzat Chimaev in a much-anticipated middleweight title clash. Going into the fight, DDP was the underdog but was confident about defending his title for the third time. However, the reality was extremely different as Du Plessis got dominated by ‘Borz’ and lost the bout via unanimous decision.
Ahead of the fight, DDP’s coach, Morne Visser, boldly promised they would neutralize Chimaev’s wrestling, but reality proved completely different. Following the crushing defeat, Visser criticized referee Marc Goddard for not making both fighters stand up more often. On a recent podcast, UFC legend Matt Serra ridiculed Visser’s excuses for not taking accountability and blaming referees.
It’s never a good point when Dricus’s coach stars doing interviews saying, ‘The Ref should have stood them up.’…Get that guy away from the mic. What are you doing? Don’t say that, ‘It was really the ref’s fault.’ Dude, you had no answer.

For five rounds, Chimaev showcased dominance against DDP, overwhelming him with superior wrestling and unmatched physical strength. He completed 12 successful takedowns on 17 attempts, maintaining a high accuracy rate while breaking Du Plessis’ defensive rhythm. Chimaev accumulated an astonishing 21 minutes and 40 seconds of ground control, leaving Du Plessis helpless under suffocating top pressure.

The Russian landed over 529 strikes in total, completely neutralizing Du Plessis and destroying any chance for offensive recovery throughout. During the intense rounds, Du Plessis’ coach appeared frustrated and helpless, failing to provide effective strategies against Chimaev’s dominance. After the bout, Visser vowed revenge, promising their team would return stronger and dethrone the relentless ‘Borz’ soon.

Khamzat Chimaev has now cemented his legacy as one of the most dominant fighters ever, widely regarded as UFC’s greatest wrestler. Throughout his title run, Chimaev manhandled veterans like Robert Whittaker and Kevin Holland, imposing relentless pressure and superior grappling dominance.

The only fighter who somewhat neutralized Chimaev’s wrestling was Kamaru Usman, but the veteran refused credit after ultimately losing. Recently, Chael Sonnen also talked about the fight on his YouTube channel and criticized DDP for his lack of preparation against Chimaev.
Dricus and his inability to solve the Chimaev problem is not something I have gained any confidence in over the last few days… Not only are they (Du Plessis’ team) not moving in the direction of being able to solve this problem, they don’t even know what the problem is….To stomp a double-leg, again, from a technical standpoint, is very easy to do. It will require the most effort and energy (in MMA), but the technique is easy. You don’t need a world or Olympic champion to learn those positions. My son is 10, he can do them both. I will make him available if you think it will help.

Nate Diaz recently discussed Chimaev, claiming he would have gladly tested the Chechen-born star on the ground if they ever fought. Former middleweight champion Sean Strickland confidently stated that he remains the best fighter capable of neutralizing Chimaev’s relentless pressure and wrestling dominance.
Their longstanding rivalry, combined with Chimaev’s current star power, makes this potential title fight a blockbuster pay-per-view. The upcoming UFC Paris card features Nassourdine Imavov facing Caio Borralho in a high-stakes middleweight clash with massive implications.
Meanwhile, UFC Vancouver headlines with Reinier de Ridder meeting Anthony Hernandez, a stylistic battle expected to shake up the division rankings. According to UFC CEO Dana White, these pivotal fights could determine the next opponent and trajectory for Khamzat Chimaev.
