Dricus Du Plessis will defend his UFC middleweight title against Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319 in a highly anticipated bout. The fight is scheduled for this Saturday in Chicago with fans across the world eagerly awaiting this explosive clash. Heading into the battle, DDP is considered the underdog, but he appears completely unfazed and unconcerned by the odds stacked against him.
Chimaev is among the UFC’s most entertaining fighters and secured his title shot after defeating former champion Robert Whittaker. Armed with devastating wrestling and relentless pressure, he has overwhelmed most opponents and anticipates a similar outcome when facing DDP. In a recent interview, Du Plessis openly mocked Chimaev’s resume while comparing his own list of victories.
If you go look at me and Khamzat, he’s eight wins in the UFC, I’m nine. Just go compare our resumes, it’s ridiculous.

Chimaev remains undefeated in the UFC, with notable victories over veterans like Li Jingliang, Gilbert Burns, and former champion Kamaru Usman. In his most recent bout, ‘Borz’ dismantled Whittaker, breaking his jaw and showcasing his overwhelming wrestling dominance against the seasoned fighter.

Meanwhile, Du Plessis has faced and beaten elite contenders and ex-champions, including Sean Strickland and Israel Adesanya, solidifying his championship credentials. While Chimaev’s wrestling remains a major threat, Du Plessis’s awkward fighting style has consistently created problems for even elite-level opponents.
His unpredictable movement, unorthodox striking angles make him extremely difficult to prepare for, often forcing rivals into uncomfortable defensive positions. Combined with his remarkable ability to find ways to win, DDP has proven himself a dangerous force.
Experts like Strickland, who has faced DDP twice, predicted the champion would win if the fight extends into the later rounds. However, he also acknowledged Khamzat Chimaev’s dangerous early submission threat, which could end the bout before Du Plessis has time to settle in. DDP’s coaches remain confident in their game plan and are already preparing strategies for the champion’s future.
Dricus Du Plessis eyes UFC Africa event
The UFC has consistently looked to expand its global reach by entering new regions, bringing live events to fresh and untapped markets. Recent examples include UFC Baku in Azerbaijan and a major fight card in China, aiming to establish a stronger foothold in Asia’s booming MMA scene. Currently, UFC executives view Spain and Africa as top expansion priorities, banking on regional champions to boost local interest and ticket sales.

The lightweight champion, Ilia Topuria, has consistently spoken about UFC Spain events but the promotion has struggled to get venues. With him and Dricus Du Plessis holding UFC gold simultaneously, this presents the perfect opportunity to finally deliver events in Spain and Africa. In a recent interview, DDP talked about this in detail and how he’s helping the process of negotiations.
I know the conversations are there between the UFC and South Africa, and the sports ministers, and the cities, and the arenas — everything is in conversation. But as an update on where we are, I don’t have anything. That is definitely something that I will get after as soon as I am done after this fight. … The UFC is now massive (in South Africa). The country is so behind the UFC and myself, behind me fighting. (I am) making sure the right people speak to the right people.

Du Plessis has always been proud of his African heritage and has gotten into beef, claiming to be the first African-residing champ. Recently, UFC’s rival promotion, PFL, held its first Africa event, which was a major hit among its fans. It would be interesting to see whether UFC plans to do something similar while DDP remains the champ.
