Iowa ranked 15th in the nation with five wins and a loss in six games. On Saturday, they faced a Minnesota team on a two-game losing streak. The Golden Gophers lost to Michigan and got blown away by Purdue last week. Even though it was a conference matchup, Iowa was heavily favored to secure a sixth victory and get their third win against a rival.
However, Iowa’s Achilles heel came back to haunt them. Hank Brown started at quarterback, posting a 4-1 record. But he only threw 5 touchdowns and completed just 62.9% of his passes.
Moreover, Brown hurt his shoulder, forcing the Hawkeyes to start backup Jeremy Hecklinski against Minnesota. Hecklinski completed 9 of 16 passes for 62 yards and one interception before Iowa sent Brown in.
Thought Iowa would contemplate making a QB change given how the first half has unfolded. Didn’t think they’d make it in the first half. Hank Brown goes 3-4 for 15 yards before punting it away. Boston Everitt pinned Minnesota at the three-yard line.

Brown completed 50% of his passes for 132 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, much to Iowa supporters ‘ dismay. One intoxicated Hawkeyes fan lost his cool and punched a Minnesota fan.
A clip posted on Twitter/X showed a frustrated Iowa fan leave his aisle and walk down a few steps. He entered a section filled with Minnesota fans. The Iowa fan said something, then threw a couple of air punches at a Minnesota supporter.
On his way back, a different Minnesota fan pushed the Iowa fan. The clip ended.

Minnesota won 13-10. Both teams are 5-2, but the Gophers have a better conference record with 3-2, while Iowa is 2-2. The Floyd of Rosedale is back in the Twin Cities for the first time since 2024. Minnesota now leads the series 64-54-2.

Iowa’s defense kept the Hawkeyes in the game
On paper, the Hawkeyes had the upper hand against their border rivals. But games are won and lost on the turf.

Both offenses were putrid. Iowa’s quarterbacks threw three interceptions and didn’t score a single touchdown. The run game was non-existent. LJ Phillips Jr. and Kamari Moulton rushed 17 times for just 47 yards. Iowa finished with 30 carries for 90 yards as a team. Minnesota gave up 300 yards to Purdue last week, but the Hawkeyes couldn’t exploit that avenue.
The defense kept Iowa in the competition. They allowed only 209 total yards. They recorded 3 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and an interception courtesy of Deshaun Lee. Aside from the opening drive in the second half and the late scoring drive, the Iowa defense didn’t get much help from the offense.

Iowa’s college football playoff dreams could be over
Iowa stood a great chance of playing postseason college football this year. However, two losses could prove detrimental in making that dream a reality.
Losing to Ohio State is understandable, but defeat to Minnesota is unacceptable for a team chasing playoffs. But the signs of decay were already present for everyone to see. They defeated Iowa State and Michigan early on, but both victories came at the expense of stellar defensive performances. An unranked Michigan lost by just one point because of poor quarterback play from Bryce Underwood, who got benched.
Iowa turned the ball over four times and still has no answer at quarterback. This one will sting for Hawkeye fans. https://t.co/QiUTWVEVwt

Next week, Iowa hosts Wisconsin at Kinnick Stadium. Afterward, they play Northwestern, Purdue, Illinois, and Nebraska.
