Two weeks ago, the Baltimore Ravens beat the Washington Commanders in Week 5 of the NFL season. While the team was busy beating Jayden Daniels and Co. on the field, a Ravens fan decided to do some beating of his own. He initiated an altercation with a Commanders’ fan and found himself in hot water.

A Baltimore Ravens fan wearing a Lamar Jackson jersey began to brutally attack two Commanders’ fans on the street and was arrested shortly after for attempted murder. The alleged assailant in this situation is John Callis, was denied bail by a judge and faces one count of first-degree assault and three counts of second-degree assault with a maximum sentence of 55 years behind bars.

John Callis turned himself in on Tuesday and was arraigned shortly after. Since he has been caught on video assaulting the Commanders’ fans, his attorney Brian Thompson is attempting to bring the charges down to a second-degree assault. He is attempting to make the argument that his client is being overcharged.

I don’t believe this is a first-degree assault. I think it’s a second-degree assault. First-degree assault requires serious bodily injury.

Brian Thompson told WJZ Investigator Mike Hellgren as reported by CBS

Things are not in the Ravens fan’s favor at the moment. There is strong evidence to show that he assaulted the fans and it was unprovoked. Judge LaTina Burse Greene rejected his attorney’s proposal to release John Callis on GPS monitoring in an outpatient treatment facility. His attorney believes that his client is in need of some help.

Of course, it’s disappointing. I think he needs help. The criminal justice system is both designed to punish and rehabilitate. He’s a 24-year old kid. He clearly has a problem. He needs help and I’m trying to get him help, and I believe the judge will be amenable to it with a different program.

During the course of court proceedings, it was revealed that John Callis has admitted to the use of recreational drugs on a regular basis in the past.

John Callis admitted to consuming cocaine regularly for the past four years. He was high on the drug on the day of the attack. In November 2021, he was put on probation after he was involved in an alcohol-induced assault in Towson after beating a man until he was unconscious.

In 2020, he was on probation after assaulting a person while drunk. John Callis has shown a pattern of being violent and is likely to be released into a program while he awaits trial. He has been fired from his job which he started just 34 days before the assault. He finds himself in a rough situation with the evidence up against him.
