William Augustus “Dub” Jones, or just Dub Jones, a former Cleveland Browns player who starred for them in the late 1940s and ’50s, passed away at home in Ruston, Louisiana, on November 2, 2024. Jones was 99 years old.

Drafted by the Cleveland Cardinals back in 1946 as the second overall pick, Jones reinvented the halfback position in the erstwhile Alliance American Football League (predecessor to the NFL). He made a couple of stops at the Miami Seahawks and Brooklyn Dodgers before joining Paul Browns’ team and spending the rest of his career.

Jones retired from playing after the 1955 season but returned in 1960 as the assistant head coach. Dub Jones left behind his wife of 78 years, Schump Jones

His son Bert Jones played 10 years as a quarterback for the Baltimore Colts and also was the NFL MVP in 1976. It was Jones Junior who first broke the news of his father’s death.

Messages pour in for the Jones family after Dub Jones’ death

Jones was a well-celebrated and respected man by friends and rivals alike. His contributions to the game of football earned him a place in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.

Indianapolis Colts (formerly of Baltimore) owner Jim Irsay wrote a message as well.

Rest in peace, DUB JONES, NFL Pro Bowl star in the ‘50s and the old AAFC of the ‘40s—and Bert’s dad. Just a few days short of 100 years old! My prayers and condolences to Bert and his family.

The remarkable career of Dub Jones

Paul Brown called Jones the “finest halfback in football.” Under Brown’s tutelage and Jones’ leadership, the Cleveland team won AAFC championships, and three teams won NFL championships.

However, Jones will always be remembered for the Browns-Bears game in the 1951 season. In that game, he scored six touchdowns, a record he shares with three other individuals. Ernie Nevers (Chicago Cardinals vs Chicago Bears) Gale Sayers (Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers 1965) and Alvin Kamara (New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings 2020).
