After missing the Ryder Cup team this year, Dustin Johnson expressed his desire to play for his country again. At the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the former World No.1 revealed his wish to be part of the team in 2027 in Ireland.

The LIV Golfer has experienced a significant dip in form in recent years. After playing an important role in his team’s win at Whistling Straits in 2021, Johnson missed the tournament in 2023 as he did not gather enough points to earn an automatic qualification spot and was not picked by captain Zach Johnson.

This year was another challenging one for him. The 2-time major champion missed cuts in the first three major championships and finished T23 at the Open Championship in Royal Portrush. In 2024, he missed the cut at the Masters Tournament and the U.S. Open.

Due to his ties with LIV Golf, the American international had very few opportunities to collect the Ryder Cup points. He finished 105th in the American Ryder Cup rankings with just 356 points.

On the LIV Golf circuit, he had some mixed results. He finished 14th in the 2025 individual standings with 5 Top-10 finishes in 13 events, with his best being a 3rd place finish in the final Indianapolis event. As a result of this, he was once again not picked as a captain’s pick.

After a bogey-free 8-under par round at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland on Thursday, the former World No.1 revealed his intention of representing his country against Team Europe at Adare Manor in 2027.

I’d love to. I wanted to be there (Bethpage). I just need to play a bit better and I can be there for Adare. I finally feel like I have my game coming back into form. I’ve got a lot more confidence in it and I am starting to swing it well again.

Dustin Johnson told the reporters

Johnson has a 12-9-0 record at the Ryder Cup in his 21 matches. In 2021, he went 5-0-0 and helped his team register a thumping 19-9 win over the Europeans.

While some backed him and expressed that he should have been a captain’s pick, there were some who thrashed him due to his connection with LIV Golf. One user on X wrote that if he wins a major in 2027, then he should be part of the team. Check out some fan reactions regarding this incident below:

Johnson’s last win on the PGA Tour was the 2020 Masters Tournament triumph. Since this win, he has won a few times on the LIV Golf circuit. He will need a better performance, however, in the next two years to keep himself in contention for the event.

Former US Ryder Cup captain names Dustin Johnson as one of the 3 LIV Golfers who should have been part of the team in 2025

This year at the Ryder Cup, 3 players from LIV Golf suited up for their teams (2 for Europe in Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, and 1 in Bryson DeChambeau for the USA). A former US Ryder Cup captain recently claimed that Dustin Johnson should have been one of the 3 players from LIV Golf to represent America this year.

The Europeans once again started strong and dominated the Americans on the first 2 days. Despite a valiant fightback on Day 3, the USA fell just short of a miraculous comeback and lost the Ryder Cup.

After this loss, the 2008 winning captain, Paul Azinger, claimed that Johnson should have been there at Bethpage. On the Golf Subpar podcast, the 65-year-old believes that Johnson, Patrick Reed, and 5-time major champion Brooks Koepka should have been on the team.

I feel like once we dipped into the well on LIV, we probably should have brought five times major winning (Brooks) Koepka who won the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. Then maybe pick Patrick Reed and Dustin Johnson. If you are going to dip into the LIV pool and pull Bryson.

Paul Azinger said

Speaking of Johnson, after a bright start on Thursday, he fired a 5-over 77 score on Friday under tough weather conditions in Scotland. His 3-under par score from the first 2 rounds had him sitting at T73.
