“We’re just trying to get the right deal structured” Dustin Poireir says, in regards to McGregor trilogy
Dustin Poirier vs Conor McGregor
Diamonds never crack but they sure do shine! Dustin Poireir recently joined Joe Rogan on his podcast (JRE MMA Show #102). In normal Rogan fashion, he kept Poireir talking for over two hours about his personal interests after fighting, his recent KO victory over Conor McGregor, and of course who he’d like to fight next.
When Rogan presented the question, Dustin responded with zero hesitation. Stating that not only did Conor want the rematch, but he did himself as well. With the series now spilt 1 a piece, (each holding a knockout over one another) the tie breaker is desperately wanted from both sides.
The Diamond wants to settle the trilogy in June or July
While discussing his previous victory over The Notorious McGregor, he made it very clear the third fight would be different. Not only from Conor making adjustments, but he plans on doing the same. With an already insane start the UFC has had this year, it looks like they have this trilogy loaded, and ready to fire at any point in 2021.
Taking into account Conor’s recent struggles in the UFC lightweight division, Dustin did in fact make it very clear the immediate rematch shouldn’t be for the lightweight title. Although he is more than willing to make the trilogy bout with Conor a championship fight. With the lightweight division simply on fire with talent at the moment, an immediate rematch for Conor is hard to justify. Especially the way Dustin finished him so viciously in the 2nd round.
One thing is for certain, the power finally rests in Dustin’s hands. With current champ Khabib Nurmagomedov possibly retiring, it looks like The Diamond is seemingly steering the lightweight division from here. He made it crystal clear he’d prefer the Conor rematch next, but with fighters like Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler all lurking in the shadows, it’s hard to decipher what fight Dustin will be presented next.
