Veteran Dustin Poirier spent most of his adult life and much of his UFC fighting tenure making good under USADA’s rigorous testing pool. ‘The Diamond’ came out with flying colors and entertained as one of the best boxers in the routine. Now that he is up next for his swan song ahead of UFC 318, Poirier wants to finish strong and get buffed right after.
Dustin Poirier is ready to bleed for his last dance and UFC 318 PPV headliner assignment against the gritty Max Holloway. The Louisiana lightweight is 2-0 against Holloway, but the Hawaiian superstar has made it clear that Poirier will go 3-0 against him.
The former interim lightweight champion once told Fox Sports that cutting to a 145-pound limit drained a lot from him, until he made a move up. Additionally, USADA’s banned substances, non-anabolic enhancers and growth stabilizers remains a complete “no” for UFC stars.
Now that he has exited USADA’s testing pool, Poirier means business when he enters the fray for a last walk at the UFC 318 pay-per-view card lineup, later this month. He has plans to get some more musculature after getting the job done at UFC 318, as he won’t be on a diet or need to cut to 155-pounds anymore.
So this will be the last time I’m ever 155 pounds in my life, I can promise you that, …I’m getting on steroids. Once USADA stops knocking on my door and I lay the gloves down, I’m getting jacked and tan. My wife’s like, ‘No you’re not!’ I’m getting on it. That’s the honest truth…I want to stay connected to [MMA] somehow, …Hopefully keep getting on with ESPN, or working the desk, just to stay around the sport and be a voice in it.
Dustin Poirier told Megan Olivi in UFC 318 pre-fight media sitdown for ESPN (@ESPNMMA)
Starting feebly as a wrestler, which isn’t even a niche culture in Louisiana like football, Poirier soon found success in martial arts due to a turbulent history and street fight cred. Glimpses of his brawler-and-buster nature came up in the infamous 2011 Fightville MMA documentary, under the co-helm of Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker. That only got a few folds above with a shift to 155lbs.

Now, The Diamond (30-9, 1 NC) has made it big, even going out on a BMF fight due to the visceral nature of the fighters contending for that particular strap. The former interim 155-pound champ failed in a last title bid to Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 PPV. Even highly removed from the equation, he often gets name-dropped in the top order for his legendary status.
Dustin Poirier once reacted to USADA and UFC’s break-up
Beginning with the debacle of the supposed 2023 return of Conor McGregor, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and UFC had a highly publicized split. “Mystic Mac” wasn’t yet back in his routine after leaving the USADA pool following his 2021 TKO leg break to Dustin Poirier.

USADA felt UFC litigation bend around corners and dodged bullets craftily to make leeway for McGregor’s quick testing pool and an expedited return. The split was brutal as UFC CEO Dana White quickly placed George Piro as the next sanctioning head. Poirier has always supported fair competition. Hence, DP hoped that the shift change would not cause any major rift.
It is what it is, man, …I’m an athlete, I don’t make the decisions on behalf of the company. I just hope whatever new testing program and regimen they’re gonna use catches the guys who are actually cheating. Not the tainted stuff, none of that stuff [Like]…The people who are deliberately cheating or using anabolic steroids or some kind of performance-enhancing drugs. I hope whatever new program they go to catches these guys.
Dustin Poirier told SBNation Network
With Lil Wayne putting a shine on the ‘Diamond’ to his usual Willie Spence and ‘The Boss’ by James Brown mix-up, this will be the last time Poirier does it. Moreover, he has the birth of his son on his mind and hopes not to return to MMA. So, after UFC 318, testing pools might be an out-of-mind and sight thing for him, once and for all.
