With the Los Angeles Lakers out of the playoffs, it’s time for their front office to look for new assets. The Lakers faced a rough 1-4 loss against the Nuggets in the first round. There were many questions raised about the structure of the team, the coaching staff, players, and more. However, their former center, Dwight Howard, has asked the Lakers to recruit him back.

Howard first played for the Lakers after spending eight seasons in Orlando. He played alongside Kobe Bryant and others while leading the league in rebounds. Not only that, but seven years later, Howard came back to the Lakers, this time winning his first championship. Since then, Superman has taken to overseas basketball and is now looking to make a comeback.

During the 2020 postseason, Howard was the backup center for the Lakers. The 6-foot-10 center not only protected the rim but stopped the elite offensive force, Nikola Jokic in the Conference Finals.

During the 2020 Conference Finals, Howard’s task was simple, to stop Jokic. Nikola Jokic, on the other hand, was a complete player, dominating both ends of the floor.

However, Howard’s defense in the paint was suffocating. According to him, he studied Jokic on and off the court, as he would then be a step ahead of Jokic in every move that he would make.

I studied this man so I knew when I played him, what I needed to do. It's a mental game. I studied him the whole summer, I watched Clips, I watched everything he did. I learned how to do what he was doing. Not so I could do it in the game. But I learned what he was doing so when he did it I was able to contain it.

Howard’s ability to read his opponent’s game combined with his athleticism and strength in the pain made him the best backup center for the Lakers. As the center is now looking to make his comeback, it will be interesting to see whether the Lakers will consider adding him to the roster for next season.
