As long as LeBron James plays basketball, the GOAT debate involving Michael Jordan will continue. As someone who has witnessed both eras, Dwyane Wade is one of the few who knows the difference.
The Miami Heat legend watched “His Airness” in his early days, and after growing up in Chicago, did not have to look elsewhere to know who the best basketball player was.
He implemented some of Jordan’s skills into his game, and eventually was nicknamed ‘Flash’ for his athletic, high-energy style of basketball, which made him one of the all-time greats.
Michael Jordan is the greatest player I’ve ever watched… LeBron James is the greatest player I’ve ever seen.
Dwyane Wade said on his podcast
The 3-time NBA champion explained that he has played against and alongside James to judge that he is the greatest basketball player. He has first-hand experience to come to that conclusion.
“Michael Jordan is the greatest player I’ve ever watched. LeBron James is the greatest player I’ve ever seen.”

He has not seen Michael Jordan play basketball, but has watched tapes that led him to believe the 6-time champion is the basketball GOAT. With this new statement, the Hall of Famer was essentially hitting two birds with one stone.
Fans react to Dwyane Wade’s Michael Jordan-LeBron James GOAT explanation
When this clip surfaced on social media, fans were left confused. They felt that, as a close friend of LeBron James, he made up this answer to ensure he would not offend him.
At the same time, the answer also does not offend Michael Jordan’s GOAT status. However, fans believe this answer was diplomacy at its best, as Dwyane Wade was essentially keeping himself in the good books of both the basketball greats.
Fans felt he had just displayed how to praise both without leaning towards one side. Check out examples of those confused social media reactions below:

That’s nice word play. “Watched” MJ because of course he did not play against him. he played with LeBron. This way he doesn’t ruffle any feathers😂

“My Girl” is the greatest song I’ve ever heard, but “Hotel California” is the greatest song I’ve ever listened to.

How you watched something
And seen something
And they both be different 🤔
Wade knows he is one of the very few who can tilt the GOAT debate. Since he does not want to court controversy, he chose the middle path, where he is not objectively placing one over the other.
GOAT debate might continue with LeBron James ‘undecided’ about future
Dwyane Wade might have thrown a wrench into the GOAT debate wheel that has been spinning for what seems like eternity. However, it could come to a stop when LeBron James decides to hang up his sneakers.

If James believes this could be his last season — something that sources close to James have insisted that he remains undecided about — he might feel even more responsibility to suit up for every game on what would then be a retirement tour.
Dave McMenamin wrote
The ESPN reporter wrote in his article what LeBron James needs to do to keep his All-NBA streak alive. Currently, the record that the all-time leading scorer has set stands at 21 seasons. With his All-NBA streak at risk, if he misses 3 more games, the primary question is if this 2025-26 season would be the 4-time league MVP’s last in the game.
Since he is still ‘undecided’, he could play in all the remaining games and continue his All-NBA streak. If not, then with that streak, the curtains will also come down on his 23rd and final season.
