Dylan Stewart needs to learn and learn quickly that even if he is a freshman, he can’t make freshman-like mistakes, and certainly not while celebrating. The top recruit who committed to the South Carolina Gamecocks just a few months ago was flagged for taunting while his team trailed the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday.

Ole Miss had possession with a 27-point lead in the third quarter. Quarterback Jaxson Dart stepped out of the pocket to avoid the South Carolina blitz until Stewart got to him.

The freshman linebacker brought him down with an excellent tackle that would make Micah Parsons proud. However, his next move would even put Allen Lazard to shame.

Dylan Stewart pulled himself up and then gestured, firing a machine gun triumphantly at Dart, who was lying on the ground.

A clearly unintelligent play by Stewart.

ESPN play-by-play announcer Dave Pasch said on the broadcast

It was bold of him to make such a move after letting in more than 25 points.

That’s a true freshman making a freshman mistake. You can’t get over the quarterback and taunt him.

color commentator Dusty Dvoracek added

The refs did not waste any time and threw a couple of flags to signal infringement. 247 Sports analyst Brad Crawford revealed Stewart was flagged for taunting Dart.

Dylan Stewart’s shenanigans did not stop

Usually, players quickly understand when to tone their bad behavior down during a game. Unfortunately, nobody bothered to educate Stewart.

Even after he was flagged for an illegal celebration, the 19-year-old continued to prove himself as a troublemaker in the last quarter.

ESPN cameras caught Stewart mimicking the gun celebration once more around the 11-minute mark. Stewart wasn’t alone because his teammates joined in, pretending to be shot by his imaginary bullets.

6. Please, bro, stop with the gun celebrations. Do something else, please. Not hating on you, but that’s a penalty every time.

Former South Carolina and Baltimore Ravens running back Mike Davis tweeted

The game eventually ended with 27-3 as either side failed to move to add any points.

Jordan Kaye, who covers the Gamecocks for The State, asked the Gamecocks’ head coach Shane Beamer about whether he spoke with Stewart about the gun celebration. Beamer replied using only one word “Yes!”

South Carolina is 3-2 after five games (both defeats came against ranked opponents). Up next, they will face a wounded #1 ranked Alabama who lost to Vanderbilt.
