For safety CJ Gardner-Johnson, the game against the New Orleans Saints was a full-circle moment for him. He was back at the place where he started his NFL career on his way to becoming one of the most sought-after safeties in the league. Now in his second stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, the 26-year-old had some words for his former team after tasting victory.
After the game, the sixth-year safety overjoyed by a memorable win, headed to the Eagles locker room. NFL Network reporter Bridget Condon heard him scream as quoted on her official X account;
They ain't no contenders they're pretenders. They have Derek Carr remember that.CJ Gardner-Johnson said
This is from a player who was on a Drew Brees-led Saints for two years before his retirement. His jibe at Derek Carr was a suggestion that he is nowhere near the level of the former Saints legend. Therefore, he feels teams should not fear them.
It seems he had some ill feelings from a few years ago that continue to be on his mind. He revealed later that it was the New Orleans Saints that did not want him on their squad and traded him to the Eagles. Gardner-Johnson still has his former team tattooed on his torso.
A native of Cocoa, Florida, life in New Orleans was the closest he could get to what he grew up in. It was also the nearest of all the three teams he has played for in his NFL career. So, it was almost a payback for CJ Gardner-Johnson.
CJ Gardner-Johnson and his Eagles stifle the high-flying Saints
Up until the time the game against the Philadelphia Eagles kicked off, the Saints were the best team in the NFL. They topped the standings after torching the vaunted Dallas Cowboys defense last week. QB Derek Carr suddenly looked like one of the best quarterbacks in the league. But tonight’s choking performance against the Eagles suggested that they are not there yet.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored a touchdown to throw the first punch. Then the Saints came back with a touchdown of their own. After the second Eagles touchdown, the Saints needed to score again or at least tie with a field goal. But Derek Carr threw an interception, that stopped any comeback in its tracks.
It was a performance from CJ Gardner-Johnson and his defense that kept the high-flying Saints at bay, recording a 15-12 win. Their combined efforts, as he kept on reiterating, was the reason they can now resume their season with a winning record.
