In Short
  • Eagles will not extend Jalen Hurts' contract until his performance improves.
  • Hurts has two years left on his current five-year, $255 million deal.
  • Fans express mixed reactions to the Eagles' stance on Hurts' contract situation.

Jalen Hurts signed a five-year, $255 million contract extension with the Philadelphia Eagles in April 2023. Hurts repaid the Eagles by leading the franchise to its second-ever Super Bowl triumph during the 2024-25 season. That achievement alone makes Hurts eligible for a second mega extension.

With two years remaining on his current contract, the Eagles must act quickly to secure a longer-term deal for the 27-year-old quarterback.

However, a source within the Eagles facility told Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer that the brass do not plan to negotiate a new deal unless Hurts improves his game. The source told the Inquirer:

[Jalen Hurts] knows this is the last year of his guaranteed money. He knows the cat’s out on some of his baggage. You’ve got to be able to produce. You can’t be near the bottom of the league in passing two years in a row with the amount of talent that we have. It’s not acceptable. And it’s everybody saying it — from Jeffrey on down. Everybody is on the same page.

Fans respond to the Eagles taking their time with Jalen Hurts’ contract situation

Saquon Barkley created magic every time he received a handoff from Hurts. Barkley led the league in scrimmage yards and bagged his first-ever offensive player of the year award.

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore stuck with the running game even in the postseason until the Eagles faced a roadblock in the Super Bowl. With Barkley struggling to gain yards, Hurts took charge, throwing for 220+ yards and 3 total touchdowns, leading the Eagles to a 40-22 victory over the Chiefs. Hurts was named the MVP of the contest.

After Moore left, the Eagles appointed Kevin Patullo as the new OC, who refrained from changing the scheme too much. However, by that point, teams across the league had figured out ways to limit Barkley’s runs. When the Eagles urged Hurts to step up, he looked rusty. AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith both topped 1,000 yards, but neither had a particularly strong impact.

With the Cowboys underperforming, the Eagles won the division but faltered at the first hurdle in the playoffs. An injury-laden 49ers team defeated the Eagles in the wildcard round. Hurts capped off the season with 3224 yards, 25 touchdowns, and 6 picks on 294 completions in 16 starts. He further added 421 yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground (lowest tally since his rookie year).

The higher-ups held Patullo responsible for the lackluster offense and fired him. While the Eagles fandom rejoiced upon hearing the news, voices within Philly questioned the brass for protecting Hurts through the entire ordeal. McLane’s report kind of supports the idea that Hurts shares some blame for the Eagles’ inability to defend their crown. Even with unsettling news about his contract, Hurts still has the unwavering support of his fans.

The message from the Eagles is clear for Hurts. Unless they see an improvement, he risks losing his place in the team. As it stands, he’s set to earn $51.5 million for the 2026 season, with another $22 million coming in 2027, and the Eagles would face major dead money penalties if they made any moves that triggered those charges.

Take it with a grain of salt, but Hurts tends to perform better when the chips are against him. His heroics from the 2022 season are still fresh in everyone’s memory. Sure, Patrick Mahomes got the better of him that year, but he forced the football fraternity to take notice of his skills.
