Recently, there has been extensive discussion in the league regarding the title of Greatest of All Time player, with much of the focus centered on Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who is on the brink of making unprecedented history. However, when Quinyon Mitchell was asked about the GOAT, he had someone else in mind– someone whom he has idolized since being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2024.

During the Super Bowl press conference on Tuesday, the Eagles’ star rookie, who is about to conclude his debut season in the NFL with a Super Bowl game or potentially a ring, paid homage to a veteran player on his team’s roster.

With a straight face, the Defensive Rookie of the Year named Darius Slay as GOAT in his position when asked to name. Mitchell’s admiration for Slay is rooted in his experience as a rookie in the league, which reflects not only the high respect he has for the six-time Pro Bowler but also the understanding of hard work and dedication required to excel in the league as competitive as the NFL.

The All-Pro cornerback has established his name among the top players at his position, who remarkably got through the typical decline of cornerbacks past the age of 30 in the NFL by accomplishing three consecutive Pro Bowl selections. In his 12-year-long career in the league, Slay has played for the Detroit Lions before getting traded to the Eagles in 2020.

Darius Slay eyes retirement after the 2025 season

As the Eagles aim for the second Vince Lombardi Trophy of the franchise, Philly’s star cornerback seems to have made his decision regarding his future in the NFL. While talking to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Dave Zangaro earlier in the season, Slay firmly stated that he wishes to pave the path for the young CBs coming into the league, suggesting that retirement is certainly on his mind.

Next year will most likely be my last. I would love for it to be with the Philadelphia Eagles,” said Slay on Tuesday when asked about his future in the league.

Currently, the star cornerback is under contract with the Eagles through the 2025 season, which seems to align perfectly with his retirement plans. He realizes how the growing age compromises the performance of cornerbacks, given there have only been seven cornerbacks of age 33 or above to start ten or more games. That’s why before he passes that threshold, he wants to hang his cleats.
