Zack Baun is staying in Philadelphia. According to reports, the Eagles agreed to extend the contract of the linebacker who dominated Patrick Mahomes during Super Bowl LIX in February.

Baun was mostly a bits and pieces player for the New Orleans Saints. He starred for the Saints’ special teams before the Eagles snagged him up last year.

Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio noticed something in the 28-year-old and put him beside Nakobe Dean and Jalen Carter in the heart of the Eagles pass rush. Baun recorded 151 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, and one interception throughout the 2024 regular season before picking off Mahomes in the Super Bowl.

The Eagles rewarded Zack Baun with a three-year extension, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported. Baun’s contract is worth $51 million, including $34 million guaranteed.

Before the announcement, general manager Howie Roseman praised Baun during the NFL scouting combine. Roseman claimed it’s very rare to find special players.

Special players are hard to find, guys who make a difference. You talk about Saquon [Barkley]; those guys are unique. Those guys are huge parts of championship teams, big-time players in big games… No matter what position you’re talking about on the field, it’s hard to find difference makers.

Zack Baun responded to signing a new contract with the Eagles

Baun became the latest player rewarded with an extension. Before him, Roseman and the Eagles extended running back Saquon Barkley’s contract. Barkley signed a two-year, $41.2 million deal.

Baun fell into the same special players category that the Eagles designated as a must-have for the 2025 season.

I’m here to do whatever I can to help the team win football games. I love the coaching staff, the guys in the locker room, the organization, the fans. Everything has been just right for me.

How does the Eagles’ salary cap look after the extension?

The Eagles entered Wednesday with about $30 million in projected salary cap space, according to Over The Cap, after releasing All-Pro cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry and extending Barkley.

Barkley’s deal cut the cap hit from $13.5 million to $6.8 million, making it easier for the Eagles to extend Baun’s contract. They still have players such as Josh Sweat waiting for their opportunity. Judging by the pace Roseman is going, Sweat might get his wish fulfilled as well. They can now perhaps target Abdul Carter in the draft, but Carter declared that he will not tank his draft stock just to join the Eagles.
