According to Derrick Gunn, the Philadelphia Eagles’ security chief, Domenic “Big Dom” DiSandro, was fined $75,000 by the NFL for texting on the sidelines. DiSandro, a beloved figure with the Eagles fanbase, reportedly texted someone from the bench area during a preseason game against the New York Jets.

As per the NFL rules, from 90 minutes before kickoff until the final whistle, including halftime, players, coaches, and most staff must keep their phones and electronic devices out of sight. Whether one’s on the sideline or up in the coaches’ booth, game time belongs solely to football.

Gunn reported that the Eagles had filed for an appeal, but it didn’t help DiSandro. Mike Garafolo provided more details on the appeal. According to Garafolo, the Eagles claimed that DiSandro had only one foot in the bench area. However, that wasn’t a reason for the organization to avoid levying such a hefty fine.

Surprisingly, this isn’t DiSandro’s, who’s affectionately called ‘Big Dom’, first brush with the NFL spotlight. Just a couple of years ago, DiSandro found himself at the heart of chaos, banned from the sidelines for the rest of the 2023 regular season after a heated clash with then 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw.

It all began when Greenlaw body-lifted Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith and drove him into the turf, a brutal hit that drew an unnecessary-roughness flag. Tempers flared, players and staff surged toward the sideline, and in the swirl of shouts and shoves, DiSandro was right in the thick of it.

Ejected from the game and later slapped with a staggering $100,000 fine, one he quickly appealed, DiSandro seemed set up as the villain. But the Eagles stood firmly behind their beloved security chief, quietly picking up the tab and showing the league exactly how much ‘Big Dom’ means to the team.

Dom DiSandro: The wall and the entrepreneur from the Eagles

As fans and NFL enthusiasts know, Dom DiSandro is the beloved security chief of the Philadelphia Eagles. The wall of protection for the beloved Birds squad is also the director of gameday coaching operations. In addition to being on the sidelines during the NFL games, DiSandro has his own business venture, too.

Big Dom launched a sock collection last month. He had teamed up with famed Hollywood actor and celebrity Pete Davidson for the promotion of his collection, which honors his Italian roots. Doublesoul calls them the world’s most comfortable socks. The Big Dom collection spans a range of styles and prices, from $13 for a sleek pair of black Italian Stripes to $72 for the full collector’s pack.

DiSandro has previously done similar merchandise, but those were for a philanthropic reason. In 2023, he launched custom “Big Dom” gear, with all proceeds benefiting the Eagles Autism Foundation.

The collection featured a sweatshirt and T-shirt in DiSandro’s signature black, adorned with an image of him wearing his iconic black cap, black suit, chain, and his trademark sideline glasses. Beneath the image, “Big Dom” is elegantly scripted in white cursive, which made it a fan favorite among the Philly army.

The Philadelphia fans, known for their passionate and dedicated support, have consistently shown their enthusiasm for the team and its players. Be it purchasing the entire stock of dog masks from online retailers like Amazon, when OL Lane Johnson and Chris Long wore dog masks to embrace their underdog status during the 2017 playoff run, or boosting the hype of quarterback Jalen Hurts’ children’s book, the Philly fans have always been hardcore.

This unwavering loyalty is why new ventures by team members are often met with great success. The new sock collection from ‘Big’ Dom DiSandro, the team’s chief security officer, is expected to be a popular choice for holiday gift-giving. The Eagles may extend the courtesy once again and even pay off the fine that he has to pay
