East Bengal will compete in the ISL, promises Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has promised the fans on Monday that East Bengal will compete in the Indian Super League, indicating that the club’s protracted disagreement with investor Shree Cements over the signing of a formal deal might be resolved shortly.

Due to the ongoing disagreement between East Bengal and their investor Shree Cement over the execution of the definitive contract of a joint venture between the two sides, the club’s involvement in ISL was in jeopardy. However, Mamata Banerjee has assured that the issue will be resolved soon.

East Bengal authorities, who had previously refused to sign the agreement paper, have scheduled an emergency meeting on Tuesday, August 3rd to address the latest scenario after the chief minister’s words of promise.

Banerjee played a key part behind the curtains in getting Shree Cement Ltd onboard as East Bengal’s investor when Quess Corp exited the club in June 2020 after two seasons as the club’s investor, setting the way for the team’s sudden entrance into the nation’s elite football league.

The term sheet agreed by the two parties at the time has yet to be converted into a final agreement since the club has requested some changes, claiming that certain provisions are disrespectful to the club’s members.

Mamata Banerjee is keen to resolve the issues between East Bengal and Shree Cements which will aid the club to participate in the ISL. She stated that just like Mohun Bagan, she wants another club from West Bengal to feature in India’s top-tier league and she will try everything possible to make that happen.

“I want East Bengal to play in ISL. There are talks going on related to the contract (final agreement) and as per information, East Bengal will play in the ISL. Last time, I had to interfere. I had no other option because Mohun Bagan was already in the ISL and I had to make sure another club from West Bengal played there.

“This time too, I will request all parties to negotiate and everything will be okay. Taking responsibility for five years is also not a joke. The investor has to spend close to INR 50 crores. Last time we had convinced them to come and invest in the club. The little differences will be solved and I hope very soon the East Bengal fans will have a smile on their faces and the club will play in the ISL,” said Mamata Banerjee.
