Elena Rybakina cruised past 21st seed Elena Svitolina in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on Wednesday (July 10). Rybakina dominated throughout the match on the Centre Court to win with scores of 6-3, 6-2, and is set to face Barbora Krejcikova in the semifinals.
Rybakina hit seven aces compared to the Ukranian’s one and committed just one double fault while the latter had four. The win also made the Kazakh the second player after World No.1 Iga Swiatek to reach seven semifinals this season. After the match, the 25-year-old talked about being a favorite at Wimbledon.
I also don’t like it to be honest. I have an aggressive style of game. I have a huge service. It’s a big advantage. Of course, I want to go till the end. Match by match. For now, I’m happy with the way I’m going. Looking forward to the next one.Elena Rybakina said during her on-court interview
Rybakina now leads a 3-2 head-to-head record over Svitolina. The fourth seed made her Wimbledon debut in 2021 and reached the Round of 16 and is also the fourth player to win 19 of her first 21 singles matches at the SW19. She has also won three titles this season, in Stuttgart, Abu Dhabi, and Brisbane.
Elena Rybakina says it’s always tough to play Elina Svitolina
Elena Rybakina has a 19-2 win-loss record in Wimbledon main draws matches and won the title in 2022 by beating Ons Jabeur (who crashed out of the event in the third round after losing to Elina Svitolina). Rybakina is now the only player left in women’s tennis who has won Wimbledon in the past. When asked about playing Svitolina, Rybakina said it’s always tough to beat her.
It's always tough to play Elina. She's a great player and fighter. No matter the score, it was not as easy as it might look like.Elena Rybakina said
Svitolina has not won a major title yet. She produced her best Grand Slam performance at Wimbledon and the US Open by reaching the semifinals in 2019 and 2023.
Rybakina’s semifinal opponent, Barbora Krejcikova, beat her in the two matches they played on the WTA Tour in the 2022 Ostrava semifinal and the 2021 Melbourne 500 in the Round of 16. Before securing her first semifinal berth at SW19, Krejcikova beat 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinals. Krejcikova is also a Grand Slam champion, winning the title in the 2021 French Open.
