Elijah Manangoi gets two-year ban for anti-doping violation: AIU
Elijah Manangoi is a Kenyan middle-distance runner, who won silver in 1500 metres in 2015 Beijing World Championships and a gold in 2017 London World Championships, handed a ban for two years by AIU.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Friday said that, Manangoi had been handed a 2 year ban after he missed 3 doping tests under the whereabouts rule. Manangoi was provisionally suspended in July. AIU said that the ban will come into effect “on the date of the third Whereabouts Failure” from December 22, 2019.
AIU said in the statement that the ruling means, “disqualification of all competitive results obtained by the athlete since 22 December 2019 with all resulting consequences, including the forfeiture of any titles, awards, medals, points prizes and appearance money,“
The former 1500 metres world champion pulled out of the 2019 Doha World Championships a few days before the tournament started.
Elijah Manangoi not the only Kenyan to be sanctioned in recent years
Manangoi is not the only Kenyan to be sanctioned in recent years. He has joined a list of other notable Kenyan players to be sanctioned recently.
Such as, 2008 Olympic 1500m champion Asbel Kiprop, former Boston and Chicago Marathon winner Rita Jeptoo and 2016 Olympic marathon champion Jemimah Sumgong.
