Elina Svitolina will continue her hunt for her fifth WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open because her run in Montreal has ended. She played in the quarterfinal of an event of this category for the fourth time this season.

It was four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka who ended her campaign and took a 5-3 head-to-head lead. After her 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Osaka in the last eight, Svitolina took to her Instagram to share a few abusive messages she received from angry bettors.

To all the bettors: I’m a mom before I’m an athlete. The way you talk to women- to mothers- is SHAMEFUL. If your moms saw your messages, they’d be disgusted…

The majority of the hateful messages that the players receive on a daily basis are from gamblers, mostly after they lose a match. Svitolina’s husband and World No.48 Gael Monfils once gave a befitting response to these disgruntled bettors by calling them “dumbest” for betting on him despite him playing against an opponent of a higher rank.

In the Canadian Open, Svitolina was bidding to win her second title of the season after her victory in the Open de Rouen. The Ukrainian ace has not yet captured a title in the WTA 500 or above category since winning the 2018 WTA Finals.

Naomi Osaka will play Clara Tauson next

Naomi Osaka has reached the semifinals of the Canadian Open for the first time in her career. She will now be up against Clara Tauson, whom she had handed the walkover when they faced each other in the final of this year’s ASB Classic.

Tauson breezed past reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys to schedule the clash with the former World No.1. The Dane, for the first time in a tournament, has registered multiple top 10 wins because before Keys, she ended six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek‘s run in the fourth round.

She’s really tough. I played her in Auckland this year, and I had to stop halfway because I was injured. So, I’m really excited that I’m healthy, and I hope that it’s a good match for everyone that comes and watches.

Naomi Osaka said during her on-court interview

Tauson has so far played two finals this season. Apart from the ASB Classic, she had secured a spot in the final of a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time in her career at the Dubai Open, where she failed to cross the final hurdle in the form of Mirra Andreeva.

The 22-year-old hasn’t yet won a title in the WTA 500 or above category. The winner of the Osaka versus Tauson will lock horns with Victoria Mboko or Elena Rybakina in the final.

Naomi Osaka will be seeded at the US Open

Osaka stands in the 29th position on the live rankings, and this means she will be seeded at the US Open. Next is the Cincinnati Masters, and Osaka will be hoping nothing but a better campaign to climb further on the rankings table.

I think I’m gonna be seeded in the US Open now because I won my match (laughs). So, that was a really big goal for me, and I’m just really excited, and if anyone tunes in, my outfit is super fire.

Osaka is a two-time US Open champion (2018 and 2020). Since winning the 2021 Australian Open, she has not yet tasted success in a tournament. After that win, she has made it to just two finals- at the 2022 Miami Open, where Swiatek denied her the win, and her defeat to Tauson in Auckland.
