Elina Svitolina sported a black ribbon on her white top for Ukraine during her fourth-round match against China’s Wang Xinyu on Monday (July 8). But even though she won the game without breaking a sweat with scores of 6-2, 6-1, she was devasted after knowing what happened in Kyiv.
In Kyiv, a primary children’s hospital was targeted by Russian missiles. Svitolina, who has always spoken about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war (which started about years ago), admitted she was not able to focus on her match after knowing about the terrible condition in her homeland.
For sure it was a good performance from my side today. It’s difficult today for the Ukrainian people. It wasn’t easy to focus today on the match. Since the morning it was difficult to read the news. To go on the court is extremely tough.
Elina Svitolina said after the match
As per reports, at least 36 civilians were killed in the attack. Kyiv was one of the five cities Russia targeted on Monday as per Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Yeah, it's incredibly sad day today for all Ukrainians. It was really difficult for me to really be here in a way and do anything. I just wanted to be in my room, just be there with my emotions, with everything.Elina Svitolina added

At least 31 killed & 125 injured in the latest Russia's missile attack on Ukraine (our largest children's medical center Okhmatdyt, Kyiv, our city Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Sloviansk, Pokrovsk and Kramatorsk) this morning pic.twitter.com/mfOTN5ffdn
Svitolina added that the children’s hospital getting hit by the missile made the day too tough to bear.
Elina Svitolina will next face Elena Rybakina
Except for her first-round match, all of Elina Svitolina‘s wins came in straight sets, including her victory over two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur. But now, the Ukrainian will face one of the toughest opponents in the quarterfinals- Elena Rybakina.
Rybakina, who received a walkover from Anna Kalinskaya, is bidding to win her second Wimbledon title, having lifted the trophy in 2022 by beating Jabeur in the final. The 25-year-old from Kazakhstan will meet Svitolina for the fifth time in her career. Both the players have won two matches each in their head-to-head encounter but it was Rybakina who won their previous meeting in the 2024 Roland Garros Round of 16.
Svitolina is a former World No.3 and has not yet reached the final of a major event. Her best performance in Grand Slam tournaments came in the 2019 and 2023 Wimbledon and the 2019 US Open when she reached the semifinals. Rybakina, apart from that Wimbledon victory, is a 2023 Australian Open finalist.
