Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has announced the end of her 2024 season due to a recurring injury. The 29-year-old played her last match of the season at the US Open, where she lost in the third round to Coco Gauff.

Svitolina revealed that she has been playing in tournaments without being 100% fit. Therefore, she wants to end her season now with hopes of starting the 2025 season in much better shape.

I had a good season, I already finished it because I got injured. To finish this year in the top 30 is a good result, considering that I was injured more [of the time] this season. The Olympics went well. Unfortunately, I couldn't bring home a medal, but there were great victories. Did I manage to approach the Games at the peak of my form, given the injury? No, I didn't manage to do so at the peak.

Svitolina began the season well at the ASB Classic, a warm-up tournament for the Australian Open. She reached the finals of the event before losing to Gauff in a close three-set match.

I didn't play as I wanted in the following tournaments because I was injured. I wanted more, I wanted to play better. Now I will treat my injuries. I hope that I can start my next season better.

However, a back injury in the Australian Open quarterfinals put a dent in her 2024 season. She withdrew after three games against Linda Noskova and reached the quarterfinals in only one other tournament for the rest of the season, which was Wimbledon.

Elina Svitolina announces changes to her coaching staff

World No.30 Elina Svitolina announced an end to her partnership with coach Raemon Sluiter. She shared the news on her Instagram stories. Sluiter, who previously coached Kiki Bertens to the Top 10, began working with the Ukranian in early 2023. Under his guidance, Svitolina returned to the Top 30, reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals, and the Wimbledon semifinals, where she defeated World No. 1 Iga Swiatek.

I just wanted to let you all know that Raemon Sluiter and I have decided to end our working relationship. We have had a great run and Ray has helped me become a better player, in my opinion he is one of the best out there on either tour and I will always be grateful of what we achieved together through his and our hard work and efforts.
Elina Svitolina said on her Instagram stories

For her achievements, Svitolina was named the WTA Comeback Player of the Year in 2023. Sluiter was also a finalist for Coach of the Year, though the award went to Tomasz Witkowski, Swiatek’s coach. The Ukranian reached the second week of three of the four Grand Slam tournaments in 2024. However, a back injury forced her to retire at the Australian Open.

I will update you all when I decide on my next moves regarding a coach. But for now I just want to thank Ray again and wish him all the best.
