‘A surprise trip in Switzerland,’ Elina Svitolina gives insights to her dream proposal

Tennis superstars Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina had announced their engagement on social media two weeks back. The news came as a surprise to fans all around the world as the couple announced they are taking ‘a break’ a few days back.

Svitolina and Monfils, who run a joint Instagram account called “g.e.m.s. life” have been dating since 2018. Svitolina credits Monfils for bringing a sense of calm to her game. G.E.M.S. stands for their combined initials: Gael Elina Monfils Svitolina.

“I’m more open with my coach and also with Gaël about the tennis and my feelings. This really changed, I think, for the past, I don’t know, nine, 10 months,” Svitolina, who has won 15 WTA titles and over $20 million in prize money during her career said last year.

Svitolina earlier played the Miami Open, where she lost in the semi-finals. She immediately flew to Europe and then the couple went to Switzerland. Recently, the World No.5 shared that she didn’t knew about the proposal and was surprised.

She said: “He brought me to a surprise trip in Switzerland. I was surprised but he was nervous so I knew something was going to happen. It was great.”

On court, Svitolina is currently in Stuttgart ahead of the Porsche Grand Prix where she is the 4th seed. She would want to use the tournament to solidify her challenge at the French Open.
