Emiliano Martinez is one of the most deadly goalkeepers when it comes to penalties. The Argentine played a crucial role in the Albiceleste’s triumph in the FIFA World Cup and both Copa America victories (2020 & 2024). The 32-year-old made headlines on Saturday for Aston Villa as he saved a crucial penalty against Fulham in the Premier League. The goalkeeper made sure that Fulham did not find the net a second time as the Villans claimed a 3-1 win on the night.

Martinez did not have the best of starts to the game as Fulham took the lead in the fifth minute. The keeper could only watch on as Raul Jimenez found the bottom right corner from a Bernd Leno assist. Morgan Rogers then pulled his side back into the game. A huge deflection helped the visitors open their account, although a handball inside the penalty area threatened Villa’s grip on the game.

However, Emi Martinez came to his side’s rescue as he guessed right to comfortably pick up Andreas Pereira‘s penalty kick. The Argentine then proceeded to rile up the home crowd as he kissed the team badge and blew kisses to the audience.

Clips of his celebration have subsequently gone viral on social media. A fan claimed that Martinez deserves to be in goal for a top club in Europe.

Aston Villa claim 3-1 win as Fulham self-destruct on matchday 8

Aston Villa came back from being 1-0 down to claim their fifth win of the League campaign as goals from Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers helped them to a 3-1 win. Despite the early setback, Unai Emery‘s men showed great courage to come back from the early deficit. After pulling level in the 9th minute, the second half saw a great shift in momentum.

Ollie Watkins leapt the highest from a Youri Tielemans corner to beat his marker and put the ball past Leno. Just when things couldn’t get worse for the hosts, Joachim Andersen was shown red for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Issa Diop then heartbreakingly conceded an own goal while trying to block a low cross into the penalty area.

Following the win, Villa are now in the top four, above Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United. Unai Emery has helped Villa to their best start to a PL season after 8 games since 1998/99. Emery also named Martinez as the best goalkeeper in the world after his stunning save. Villa play their next game against Bournemouth later this month.
