Argentinian goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez recreated his infamous ‘X-rated’ celebration, with the 2024 Copa America trophy. The 32-year-old shot-stopper had previously regretted performing the controversial celebration, after their 2022 FIFA World Cup triumph.

Argentina most recently won the 2024 Copa America, in the USA defeating Colombia 1-0 in the final. Following their 3-0 win over Chile in a 2026 WC qualification match, a replica Copa America trophy was presented to the fans, with each player taking turns to showcase it.

Once Emiliano Martinez got his chance, he decided to repeat the controversial act by placing the trophy on his groin to make a gesture, amusing fans and his teammates alike. He was also named as the best goalkeeper at the Copa America.

The 32-year-old keeper had performed a similar celebration during the 2022 World Cup winning ceremony in Qatar, after being handed the Golden Glove. It was a lewd gesture that left fans in debate, with some suggesting that it was targeted towards French players. The ex-Arsenal keeper had, however, later claimed that he was ‘not proud’ of what he had done, and regretted it. Martinez had also exclaimed that he never swore or insulted players on the pitch.

Meanwhile, Argentina is currently on top of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualification table, winning six out of their seven matches. They are set to face Colombia next, before the end of the ongoing international break, which they have been playing without Lionel Messi.

He made 47 appearances for Aston Villa last season, conceding 48 goals and keeping nine clean sheets. Alongside Emi, Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, Valencia star Giorgi Mamardashvili and AC Milan’s Mike Maignan also made it to the list.

They will also be joined by PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, Real Madrid youngster Andriy Lunin, Bilbao’s Unai Simon, Inter Milan’s Yann Sommer and Porto’s Diogo Costa. Meanwhile, South African keeper and AFCON star Ronwen Williams is a surprising inclusion in the list.
