Emma Navarro met Iga Swiatek for the second time in her career at the Australian Open 2025 quarterfinals. The Pole defeated Navarro with a score of 6-1, 6-2. Later in the day, Navarro appeared for the Australian Open press conference where she spoke about her experience from this match.
The American was asked about a controversial point from the match. This moment arose at 2-2 in the second set when Swiatek returned a drop shot that had bounced twice before her contact. The chair umpire, Eva Asderaki-Moore, missed the double bounce, and Navarro, having continued the point, was unable to challenge the call due to current regulations. Swiatek stated she was unsure about the double bounce during play and relied on the umpire’s judgment.
Emma Navarro had a rather balanced stance on the controversial point, not putting blame on anybody. She emphasized that players should be allowed to review points after they have finished, as decisions made during play can be difficult to judge accurately in the heat of the moment.
Regardless of the point, Iga Swiatek was very dominant throughout the game. She has been in excellent form in this tournament, not dropping a set en route to the semifinals, and producing a couple of bagel and breadsticks throughout her campaign.
Iga Swiatek advances to her second semifinal at the Australian Open
Emma Navarro also acknowledged Iga Swiatek as a highly aggressive player, noting her quick movements and consistent intensity. This made it challenging for Navarro to maintain her own pace during the match. She noted her opponent’s ability to control court position making it difficult for her to execute her game plan effectively, which contributed to her defeat.
With this victory, Swiatek has advanced to her second Australian Open semifinal. This match, where she will face another American opponent- Madison Keys, will take place at Rod Laver Arena.
The upcoming match will be the sixth meeting between Swiatek and Keys. They have faced each other before at Rome 2021, Indian Wells 2022, Cincinnati 2022, Madrid 2024 and Rome 2024. Swiatek’s sole loss to Keys happened in Cincinnati at 2022.
