Emma Raducanu expressed her displeasure over line calls she called were ‘bad’ about a day after British compatriot Harriet Dart criticized the standard of line-calling at the Nottingham Open. Raducanu said she felt as if she was playing against two opponents.
In her first round, Raducanu beat Japan’s Ena Shibahara in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to register her first WTA victory in Britain. While criticizing the line calls, she said she felt as if it was deliberately done to make the match more competitive. However, the 21-year-old was happy that she did not lose her cool.
Today I felt they were all against me, but it just makes me feel better because I managed to beat her and the umpire as well. It is difficult when there is no challenge, but it is something everyone has to deal with. You can be fortunate in some ways. Maybe it was just trying to make the match more competitive, it was 6-1 and 5-1 and all of a sudden, the first point serving at 5-3, was a bad line call.Emma Raducanu said at the press conference
Notably, Harriet Dart, during her intense first-round match against Katie Boulter, described the umpiring in the tournament as “pretty appalling”. She burst out in anger during the second set and started arguing with the umpire, betting £50,000 over the line call.
Emma Raducanu was happy with the way she played her first match
Emma Raducanu, who underwent three surgeries (on her two wrists and an ankle) last year, is back on court. After participating in the Madrid Open, she was denied the wild card to enter the Roland Garros, which she ended up skipping.
She wanted to focus on the grass-court session so that she could be at her best at the Wimbledon Championships. After her win over Ena Shibahara, Raducanu expressed how she was happy with herself during the match.
And just more happy with how I was in myself. My demeanor was great, my attitude was great, that is the most important thing, and if I have that, then I know tennis will follow.Emma Raducanu said
Radcucanu will next face Ukraine’s Daria Snigur in the Round of 16, on June 13. It will be their first encounter on the WTA Tour. Raducanu is on her quest for her second WTA title since her 2021 US Open victory as a qualifier.
