Emma Raducanu weighed in on Carlos Alcaraz’s new haircut at the U.S. Open, giving it her approval on Wednesday. The Spaniard’s fresh buzz cut has sparked mixed reactions since he unveiled it earlier in the week.

Alcaraz’s new look first caught attention on Monday after his dominant win over Reilly Opelka in the opening round. The hairstyle quickly became a talking point among fans and players at Flushing Meadows, with opinions divided across social media. Raducanu said in her US Open press conference:

I think Frances was harsh on him [laughs]. I think the fact that he does it with confidence & owns it… I think he pulls it off.

Raducanu, who recently partnered with Alcaraz in the revamped mixed doubles event, said that the 22-year-old carried the style well. Their pairing had already fueled speculation about a possible romance, but she kept her focus on supporting his bold change.

Alcaraz himself revealed the haircut wasn’t planned. After his win, he explained that his brother accidentally botched a trim with clippers before the tournament, leaving him no choice but to embrace the close-cropped look.

Emma Raducanu on the brink of rankings breakthrough

British tennis star Emma Raducanu extended her strong run at the US Open with another commanding performance on Wednesday. The world No. 36 cruised past Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen 6-2, 6-1 in just one hour on Court Louis Armstrong, halting the 23-year-old’s breakthrough campaign.

Her victory came only two days after a quick first-round win over Ena Shibahara, which had been her fastest-ever Grand Slam triumph at 62 minutes. That record stood briefly before she topped it with an even swifter display against Tjen.

This tournament marks a turning point for Raducanu, who had not won a match at the US Open since her remarkable title run four years ago. Now back in the third round at Flushing Meadows, she has dropped just six games in her opening two matches — the fewest she has ever conceded en route to this stage of a major.

The win also represents her 26th match victory of the 2025 season, already her career-best total with more than two months left to play. At only 22 years old, Raducanu continues to build momentum and confidence in what is shaping up to be her most consistent year on tour.

Emma Raducanu makes history at the US Open

2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu is rekindling memories of her dream run in New York after storming into the third round of the US Open. Four years ago, she shocked the tennis world by coming through qualifying and lifting her first Grand Slam trophy, a triumph that instantly turned her into a global star.

Since that unforgettable breakthrough, her journey has been far from smooth. Injuries and inconsistent results have made it difficult for her to match those early expectations. Yet at 22, she looks stronger and more composed, showing signs of rediscovering the level that once carried her to glory.

Her first-round match against Ena Shibahara lasted just 62 minutes, marking her quickest victory at a Slam. Two days later, she went even faster, dismissing Janice Tjen 6-1, 6-2 in exactly one hour. Both matches highlighted her improved sharpness and control on court.

With these back-to-back dominant wins, Raducanu has climbed to No. 33 in the live WTA rankings. Her performances suggest she is not only back in form but also ready to make a serious impact at the top of the women’s game once again.
