Andy Murray has been battling with injuries for most of his career- one of the key reasons he wants to hang his racquet after this season. However, fellow countrywoman Emma Raducanu has revealed that she doesn’t believe he will retire soon.
The British star earlier revealed that this year will be his final on the tour following an illustrious career. Murray won 46 singles titles, including three Grand Slams but most of them came before suffering his first major injury in 2017.
Since 2024, he has been injured twice, first at the Miami Open in March and during the Queen’s Championship a few days ago. He will most probably miss Wimbledon following the back injury he sustained at the Queen’s Club. The former World No.1 is racing to be fit for what is believed to be his last Wimbledon championship.
Nonetheless, Raducanu doesn’t believe the reports from the media about Murray’s retirement. The former US Open champion admitted that Murray’s love for tennis would make him continue playing.
One thing I've heard of him and I know is that he loves tennis and the challenges that come with it. He doesn't care about what anyone thinks or says about him, he just loves doing what he does. I have no idea what's going on, but I don't believe everything that's said in the press, because a lot of times it's not reality at all.Emma Raducanu said via SkySport.
The British Olympic Committee has included Murray in the tennis team. The 37-year-old is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning it in London 2012 and Rio 2016.
Emma Raducanu happy to have rekindled her love for tennis in the grass season
On the other hand, Emma Raducanu earned her first Top 10 win by beating American Jessica Pegula in the second round of the Rothesay International. The former US Open champion had lost her previous seven meetings against a Top 10. But at Eastbourne, her incredible grit saw her best Pegula in three sets- 4-6, 7-6(6), 7-5.
The British star recently admitted that she was happy to rekindle her love for tennis after being away for the majority of last year.
I'm very happy to have rekindled the love for tennis and just enjoying the challenges that come with it and not getting so down about it, just trying a way to go around.Emma Raducanu said via BBC.
Raducanu reached the semifinals of the Nottingham Open, her first grass tournament of the year. She will be hoping to take the form to Wimbledon, where she can prove her critics wrong.
