Home favorite Emma Raducanu secured her spot in the second week of Wimbledon with a commanding victory over Greece’s Maria Sakkari in a match that took place under a closed roof on Centre Court. The 2021 US Open champion delighted fans by defeating the ninth-seeded Sakkari in just one hour and 32 minutes.
Raducanu was brimming with confidence against the Greek player, who looked shattered right from the start. After the win, the British player expressed her delight at the result and thanked the vocal crowd for their support.
I think today was really up there with the most fun I have had on a tennis court, I really enjoyed every single moment. I was telling myself you don’t know how many times you are going to get the chance in your life to play in front of a full Centre Court, so I’m really grateful for the support.
Emma Raducanu said in her post-match interview.
Raducanu impressed with her resilience, saving all seven break points she faced during the match. This win marks the 21-year-old’s only second career victory over a Top 10 player. She has also reached the second week at Wimbledon for the first time since her breakthrough Round of 16 appearance in 2021.
I’m most proud of how focused and determined I was in every single point, in every single moment. Maria [Sakkari] is a top-10 opponent. In a way, I came in with a free swing. But she is so tough, she has amazing weapons, I knew I had to battle. I tried to not let the scoreline affect me. You just have to play every point like it could be your last, not to be dramatic!
Emma Raducanu added
Next up for Raducanu is a clash with World No. 123 Lulu Sun, who saved two set points in the second-set tiebreak to beat Zhu Lin 7-6(4), 7-6(6).
Emma Raducanu gives Great Britain fans something to cheer about at Wimbledon
British tennis fans haven’t had the best days at Wimbledon recently, with Andy Murray and his brother Jamie Murray making an opening-round exit in the men’s doubles. This happened not long after the three-time Major winner decided to not compete in the singles in his final career appearance at SW19.
With Sonay Kartal demolished in straight sets by second seed Coco Gauff, Harriet Dart and Emma Raducanu have stood out as the shining light for home fans. Currently ranked World No. 135, Raducanu has shown impressive form during the grass swing.
Having missed this part of the season last year due to injuries and surgeries, she has made amends by reaching the semifinal in Nottingham and advancing to the quarterfinals in Eastbourne. Dart can join her compatriot in the fourth round if she manages to get past Xinyu Wang on Saturday, July 6.
Besides her singles campaign at Wimbledon, Raducanu has also decided to team up with Andy Murray in mixed doubles.
