Emma Raducanu’s ex-coach Mark Petchey has opened up about what led to the end of his coaching partnership with the British star. The former World No.80, who coached Andy Murray in the early stages of his career, began collaborating with Raducanu at the Miami Open, just days after she parted ways with Vladimir Platenik.
Their partnership yielded instant success as Raducanu won four matches and reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 event in Miami, which was arguably her best run since lifting the 2021 US Open. The good form then led Raducanu to compete in four clay-court tournaments, the most she has featured in a season.
At the Italian Open, she won three matches and got to the fourth round for the first time in her career before losing to Coco Gauff in straight sets. She also reached the quarter-finals of the Queen’s Club Championships before getting to the semi-finals of the Washington Open, losing to Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets.
The impressive turnaround has seen her go from World No.60 to No.35 in the ATP rankings. With a couple of wins at the US Open, she’s bound to break into the Top 30 for the first time in her career. Also, she holds a 20-10 win-loss record across 10 events she played while working with Petchey.
However, Petchey parted ways with Raducanu due to his job as a tennis commentator for Tennis Channel. He revealed via OLBG that he ended his partnership with Raducanu amicably. He added that he stayed longer in the coaching role because the Brit was still sorting out things with her current coach:
The way we stopped working together was totally amicable. My job at the start with her was going to be just Miami. Then obviously it became longer through to Wimbledon, and then obviously she had three days with Francis Roig, Rafael Nadal’s former coach, after Wimbledon and that went well. But he couldn’t start due to other commitments until Cincinnati. So, around the work stuff that I have, we stayed in contact, and I helped her up in Montreal as best I could.
Raducanu is currently working with Rafael Nadal’s ex-coach Francisco Roig. Their partnership kicked off at the Cincinnati Open, where the 22-year-old won just one match before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the third round. Nonetheless, there was an impressive improvement in her game as she pushed the World No.1 in three sets.
Mark Petchey says Emma Raducanu is “living a lot of her career in reverse”
Emma Raducanu has often been criticized for not reaching her expectations after winning the 2021 US Open. The former World No.10 struggled with injuries after her triumph in New York and also failed to settle down with a coach. That led her to struggle on the court, which also saw her drop out of the top 300.

It was last year that she began climbing up in the WTA rankings. During the aforementioned interview, Mark Petchey revealed that the British No.1 is living a lot of her career in reverse and that has been easy for her to adapt to:
She’s living a lot of her career in reverse and that’s not been easy. Having set the bar so high so early on in your career every week you are measured not just by other people’s expectations but also your own expectations. That is a good thing because it drives you to be as good as you can be. But on the other hand, it’s difficult, because at times it can feel like you’re not hitting the standard you want to because that’s where your bar is at.
Raducanu competed at the revamped US Open mixed doubles event in New York. She partnered with Cincinnati Open champion Carlos Alcaraz and they lost to Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper in their opening match at the tournament.
