Emma Raducanu suffered a demoralizing defeat to World No. 54 Sofia Kenin 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the first round of the US Open. A tearful Raducanu admitted to feeling ‘sad’ as she wanted to do well in the tournament she won in 2021. Along with the heartbreaking exit, Raducanu may lose sponsors if reports from the UK are to be believed.
The 21-year-old is 18/11 on the season and is World No. 72. She is at the receiving end after her unsuccessful campaigns in almost every tournament she has played. Fans and pundits have been questioning whether her main focus is to win matches or just to sign lucrative deals with brands.
As per The Telegraph, several sponsorship deals are not renewed this season. Raducanu became an overnight star at the 2021 US Open which she won as a qualifier. Big brands took notice of her and soon Raducanu signed deals with brands like British Airways, Vodafone, Tiffany, Dior, Porsche, Evian, Wilson, Nike, and HSBC.
Since that US Open win, Raducanu has failed to win a single title on the WTA Tour. Last year, she remained on the sidelines due to multiple injuries. Most of the earnings in 2023 are likely to have come from the aforementioned brands as she won less than £200,000 in prize money.
John McEnroe befuddled about Emma Raducanu’s performances
Emma Raducanu skipped the French Open and prepared for the Wimbledon. She did perform impressively in the tournaments preceding Wimbledon, reaching the semifinals and the quarterfinals at the Nottingham Open and the Eastbourne International respectively. At Wimbledon as well, she reached the fourth round.
Following Wimbledon, the Brit decided not to play at the Paris Olympics and instead featured in the Citi Open, and reached the quarterfinals. As she was not handed the wild cards for the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open, she opted to not play the Qualifiers and instead trained at the National Tennis Center in south-west London, a decision many criticized. Even John McEnroe is not able to understand what exactly is going on with the youngster.
Sometimes I see her and it looks like she is heading back towards the top of the game and then other times I’m a bit befuddled about what’s going on. I’m not close to her team and what is going on, but I hope she is healthy. There were a couple of matches at Wimbledon and she looked really good and then in the last one, she looked really shaky.John McEnroe told Tennis365
One of the next destinations for Raducanu is Seoul for the Korea Open. The event will start on September 16 at the Olympic Park Tennis Centre.
