Emma Raducanu has responded to Judy Murray‘s indirect criticism following her withdrawal from the mixed doubles match alongside Andy Murray. The 21-year-old had withdrawn from the Wimbledon category after suffering the stiffness in her wrist.
For context, Raducanu was enjoying a good spell of results in the singles, winning her two opening matches before Murray decided to ask her for a mixed doubles partnership. The young British star agreed because Murray had decided to withdraw from his men’s singles category days after undergoing back surgery.
However, he went along with his doubles match alongside his older brother Jamie Murray. Despite the duo losing their opening match, Murray was given a befitting farewell ceremony by the Wimbledon organizers. Nevertheless, with his partnership alongside Raducanu, fans were expecting to see the tennis legend play again.
Surprisingly, Raducanu withdrew from the mixed doubles match ending Murray’s Wimbledon career. The British star was heavily criticized and bashed for her decision. Judy Murray added to the criticism with a one-word response ‘astonishing’. Recognizing this, Raducanu felt mama Murray didn’t mean it.
It was properly from an emotional perspective. I am sure she didn’t mean it.Emma Raducanu said via Wimbledon press
It was a very strange situation for Murray, who previously had been the one struggling with injuries, and not his partners. The Scot has withdrawn from the Wimbledon on four occasions due to various injuries.
Emma Raducanu admits she made the right call by withdrawing from the mixed doubles category at Wimbledon
While Murray’s admirers might not agree but Emma Raducanu admitted that she made the right decision by withdrawing from the mixed doubles category at Wimbledon. She enjoyed her Wimbledon run beating Maria Sakkari but eventually lost to New Zealand qualifier Lulu Sun in the fourth round.
The 21-year-old struggled physically against Lulu and at one time had to call for medics due to back pain. She revealed that it was also due to a scheduling error, which made her prioritize her singles over the mixed doubles match.
I have to prioritize myself, my singles, and my body. I think it was the right decision, I stand by the decision. Obviously, it was a tough decision though because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to do.Emma Raducanu said via Sky Sports
Raducanu was ranked No.135 before entering Wimbledon. She will be climbing into the Top 100 when the updated WTA ranking is released.
