Emma Raducanu will be heading to the 2025 US Open with new confidence after battling with World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the third round of the Cincinnati Open. The Brit is yet to reach the fourth round of any Grand Slam this season, but at Flushing Meadows, she is ready to give her best on the court.

Raducanu first announced herself to the tennis world at the 2021 US Open after she defeated Leylah Fernandez in the final, having entered as a qualifier. Following her victory, the British star failed to meet expectations on the court and struggled with several injuries, which led her to drop out of the top 300 in the WTA rankings.

But since last year, she has been climbing up the rankings and has continued to build her confidence on the court. She fully rediscovered her form during her time with Mark Petchey in March. She reached the Miami Open quarter-finals, her best run at a WTA 1000 event, and since then has won 21 of her 32 matches.

She opened her North American hard-court campaign with a semi-final run at the Washington Open. After that, the former World No.10 then went on to reach the third round of the Canadian Open. At Cincinnati, she pushed Sabalenka to a three-set thriller, but eventually fell 6(3)-7, 6-4, 6(5)-7 to the defending champion.

After the defeat, she revealed during her post-match press conference that despite having a poor start to the season, she has improved on the court. She added that she’s looking forward to competing at the US Open:

I had a tough start to the year and it was very difficult to change that. But in the last few months I’ve been building and the level has been increasing. The players I’m playing and losing to, they’re all top players, so that gives me confidence. On the court, I take more confidence in the big moments. I’ve been playing those big points pretty well for the most part so I’m looking forward to having some time to practice, improve and then get ready to play there.

Currently, Raducanu’s live WTA rankings are World No.34, and she hopes that with the withdrawal of Qinwen Zheng and Paula Badosa from the US Open, she will be able to be a seeded player at the tournament. Raducanu suffered a first-round exit at the Grand Slam tournament last year after losing to Sofia Kenin.

Emma Raducanu happy with the improvements in her game after just a week’s training with her new coach

Emma Raducanu’s partnership with Andy Murray’s ex-coach Mark Petchey ended after the Wimbledon Championships. Her collaboration with the British coach was only temporary. Ahead of the Cincinnati Open, she appointed Rafael Nadal’s ex-coach Francisco Roig. They kicked off their union at the WTA 1000 event winning just one match.

Despite just one win, Raducanu is really impressed working with the Spanish coach. She revealed after her exit from Cincinnati that, in a week of training together there are already improvements in her game:

The first week went well. I think we practiced well and I made some improvements. For certain moments, you could see the stuff we practiced, but I just haven’t done it for long enough that I can’t do it for so long yet. But given it’s only been a week, I think there’s been improvements.

Raducanu is known for not staying long with a coach. Since she claimed the 2021 US Open, she has parted ways with seven coaches, including Vladimir Platenik, who worked with her for just two weeks.
