Emma Raducanu has been enduring a very terrible season after her comeback from injuries. Despite an encouraging clay season start, she fumbled and didn’t compete at the French Open. She has finally found form after reaching her first grass-court quarterfinals at the WTA 250 Nottingham Open.
The British star earned her first grass-court win after beating Japanese qualifier Ena Shibahara in a straight set in the first round. She eased past World No.127 Daria Snigur 6-2, 6-2 to reach the last eight of the tournament. Before the start of the Nottingham Open, Raducanu was below the Top 200 in the WTA rankings.
However, with a victory against Snigur, the former US Open champion is set to climb 26 places, from No. 209 to No. 183. Nevertheless, Raducanu didn’t start as brightly as expected against the former junior Wimbledon champion. She found herself trailing 0-2 in the first set but quickly rebounded, with a crucial game turning the tide in her favor. Raducanu proceeded to break Snigur’s serve again on a double fault, winning the remaining six games of the match.
After the victory, she admitted the match was “tricky” at the start. Although she gained confidence in the second set and found that Snigur didn’t pose enough of a challenge, Raducanu acknowledged Snigur as a good player.
It was an extremely tricky match. Honestly, I knew from before I came on I need to be on it today because Daria is a really good player and grass court player especially. She won junior Wimbledon, I played with her in the juniors growing up so I know how tricky she is to play.Emma Raducanu said via Tennis365
Raducanu would be hoping to take full advantage of the Nottingham Open and rack up more points for herself. The British star could jump another 19 spots to No. 164 if she wins her quarterfinal match.
Emma Raducanu hoping Nottingham Open can inspire like it did in 2021
Emma Raducanu will be facing either Francesca Jones or American Ashlyn Krueger for a place in the semifinals of the Nottingham Open. The British star has been working with a different coach for the grass season—Jane O’Donoghue—and seems to be progressing fine with her.
Nottingham holds a special place in Raducanu’s heart because it was the tournament that propelled her to her famous victory at the US Open. She was given a wildcard to the tournament in 2021 but despite exiting in the second round, it helped her get a wildcard for Wimbledon the following month.
At Wimbledon she reached the fourth round. The Brit then continued with the form and won the US Open later that year. Raducanu is now looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd again this year.
