Emma Raducanu has been inconsistent on the court and in her performance this season. She pledged to participate in the WTA 250 Hong Kong Open which gets underway on October 28. However, six days before the event, the British star has withdrawn from the competition due to a foot injury she has been nursing.

The 21-year-old’s first-round loss at the US Open, made her decide to feature in back-to-back tournaments in the Asian swing. At the Korean Open, she won two matches to earn her place in the quarterfinals. However, in the last-eight match against Daria Kasatkina, the British star was forced to retire after suffering a foot injury.

Since then, she has been forced to withdraw from the WTA 1000 events in Beijing and Wuhan. She further withdrew from the Guangzhou and Ningbo Open. Last week, she posted a video on social media, revealing that she was going to be back on the court for the Prudential Hong Kong Open.

Surprisingly, on Tuesday (October 22), the tournament organizers revealed that she had withdrawn from the event. The Hong Kong Open is set to be the last event before the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia. This means that the British star’s WTA Tour season has officially ended.

Meanwhile, her spot has been filled up by former US Open champion Sofia Kenin. It was Kenin, who defeated Raducanu in the first round of the US Open in August.

Naomi Osaka follows Emma Raducanu’s footsteps, as she withdraws from the Hong Kong Open

Naomi Osaka has also withdrawn from the Hong Kong Open less than a week after confirming she would play at the WTA 250 event. The Japanese had been expected to line up with Emma Raducanu in the tournament.

Osaka has been absent from the court since suffering an injury in the China Open. She was forced to retire in the third set against eventual champion Coco Gauff after winning one set. She revealed that despite not competing at the event, she will be attending the same.

I love visiting the tournament and despite the obvious disappointment of not being able to play, I want to reassure all my wonderful Hong Kong fans that I will still be attending the event. I am very much looking forward to meeting you all. There is a wonderful line-up of world-class players coming to the tournament and I want to wish them all the best of luck in this exciting event.

Osaka’s withdrawal from the Hong Kong Open also means she has ended her 2024 season. The Japanese star last reached the quarterfinals of an event at the ‘s-Hertogenbosch Open in June. There she lost to Bianca Andreescu in three sets. The former World No.1 will be hoping to do better next year.
