Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu has shared insights into her admiration for tennis great Andy Murray. The Scottish legend is bidding farewell to SW19 this year, where he emerged victorious in 2013 and 2016.

Raducanu herself has been a British No. 1 like Murray, but she has never hidden the fact that she has learned a lot from the former World No. 1. She was speaking in her post-match press conference after her first-round win at Wimbledon.

The biggest standout thing for me was when he lost in the final here of Wimbledon and came back a month later and won the Olympics. To get through 6 really difficult rounds and then lose in the final.. then to play a month later and be in the final again.. your mind without you realizing runs Deja vu scenarios.. like ‘ok I made it to the final.’ It’s very difficult to shut that out. Which is in a way why I’m very grateful I won the US Open.
Emma Raducanu said in her post-match press conference

Murray lost in four sets to Roger Federer in the Wimbledon 2012 final and couldn’t hold back the tears in his post-match interview. However, his fortunes changed the next time he appeared at the All-England Club. Representing Great Britain, he defeated Federer, representing Switzerland, in the Gold Medal match 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.

This paved the way for Murray to win his first Grand Slam title at the US Open later that year, where he defeated Novak Djokovic in five sets. Then, at Wimbledon 2013, just 12 months after his devastating loss to Federer, he completed the fairytale by beating Djokovic in straight sets to claim his first Wimbledon title.

Because to make the final and not win it, you’ll always kind of have in the back of your head ‘will I ever get it?’ For me, I have it now. I’m just loving life I guess.

Recalling Andy Murray’s disastrous preparation for Wimbledon

When Andy Murray lost in the first round of Roland Garros against Stanislas Wawrinka, much was expected that the former World No. 1 would arrive in ideal condition for his final Wimbledon tournament.

Murray made a last-minute decision to play at the Queen’s Club. He won his first match against Australia’s Alexei Popyrin, which marked his 1000th match on the ATP tour. However, bad news was around the corner as the Scottish legend withdrew from his Round of 16 clash against Jordan Thompson after sustaining a back injury.

Initial reports came out that Murray had withdrawn from potentially his final Wimbledon tournament. However, those reports were retracted as the three-time Grand Slam champion’s team made a dramatic u-turn, and Murray made himself available for the Men’s Singles draw.
