A series of successive opening round exits, a change of coaches, and a harrowing stalking incident—Emma Raducanu‘s 2025 season had been rather tough and unpleasant. However, the Brit has shown great resilience throughout all of this, and the tide is finally turning for her at Miami Open.

Raducanu looked very happy and cheerful and a bit in disbelief as she had the best victory of her season, defeating eighth seed Emma Navarro in the Round of 64 of the Miami Open on Friday. It was only the third win of Raducanu’s career against a player ranked in the world’s top 10—and first on a hard court.

We were both fighting so hard. The atmosphere was great. There were 2 Emma’s. It was like ‘come on Emma.’ We didn’t know which one was getting the support.

Emma Raducanu said in the post-match interview

In the ‘Battle of Emma’s’, Raducanu took the first set tiebreak against the American before taking a medical timeout for blisters on both feet after a listless second set. Raducanu seemed set for defeat when she faced more break points, falling 1-3 down in the decider.

But the World No. 60 then fought back to win four consecutive games, and after failing to serve out the rollercoaster match at 5-3, she regrouped to win the match tiebreak to triumph 7-6, 2-6, 7-6. After sealing the victory with a ripping forehand winner on her second match point, Raducanu broke into a beaming smile, putting her hands on her head in disbelief.

Emma Raducanu is currently without a permanent coach

Emma Raducanu abruptly ended her partnership with coach Vladimir Platenik after working together for just two weeks. It was Raducanu’s seventh split with a coach in the past three years.

Raducanu has been without a permanent coach since Nick Cavaday left her team in January to prioritize his health. Before Cavaday and Platenik, Raducanu worked with Nigel Sears, Andrew Richardson, Torben Beltz, Sebastian Sachs, and Dmitry Tursunov.

Against Navarro, Raducanu had Mark Petchey—a well-known figure in British tennis circles who worked with her as a teenager—offering coaching advice from her box. It is not clear, though, how long the arrangement will go on for.

Emma Raducanu will face McCartney Kessler in the next round of the Miami Open

Emma Raducanu arrived in Miami after an opening round exit at the Indian Wells in California. This also marked her first match since the Dubai stalking incident. At Indian Wells Masters, she was defeated by Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets.

The exit led her to slip in her rankings, falling out of the Top 50. In her opening round match in the Miami Open, Raducanu had a dominating straight-set victory over wildcard Sayaka Ishii in just an hour. After stunning Emma Navarro in the next round, Raducanu will face another American, McCartney Kessler, in the third round of the tournament.

Kessler, on her part, defeated 30th seeded Linda Noskova and Marie Bouzkova to set up the clash against the 2021 US Open winner.
