British tennis ace Emma Raducanu decided to skip the 2024 Paris Olympics because she felt a change of surface in such quick intervals was not ideal for her body. The 21-year-old also skipped the 2024 Roland Garros- the clay-court Grand Slam tournament for the same reason. Raducanu chose to start the hard-court season instead of going to Patis for the Games.

However, she admitted to feeling ‘missing out’ after watching her peers represent their respective countries. As Raducanu readies herself to compete at the WTA 500 tournament in Washington D.C., she was asked about her decision to choose this tournament over the Olympics. The Briton, in response, reemphasized her reluctance to change surfaces too quickly.

As Raducanu has been hit with injuries too often and had to undergo surgery on both of her wrists as well as an ankle, she is now maintaining extra care. Raducanu is picking and choosing tournaments and the Olympics did not come at a good time for her. But the FOMO is there for the Briton.

The change of surface isn't the best thing for me right now. In the future, maybe it would have been. At this moment in time, I think switching to clay straight after grass, it's such a big contrast, then back onto the hard courts, I didn't want to risk anything...

However, the 2021 US Open champion is content with her decision as she deemed it “a right call”.

Of course, there are elements of FOMO, missing out. Watching the Olympic ceremony, everybody in the team kits, a part of you obviously wants to be there and representing your country.

Emma Raducanu focusing on the bigger picture- US Open

The decision to skip the 2024 Paris Olympics was taken after a lot of consideration and while the change of surface was one, playing the 2024 US Open was another major factor for Emma Raducanu. She talked about the importance of this aspect in her decision-making.

While reviewing her performance on grass, Raducanu expressed that she was happy to be back in the top 100 as it would allow her a direct entry into the Grand Slam tournament.

Yeah, I think I made some pretty good strides in my game over the last few months. I started the grass season ranked outside of 200 and finished it in the top 100. For me, that was relatively successful. It guaranteed me a spot hopefully in the main draw of the U.S. That was a big thing for me. I wanted to make sure I got into the slams.

Notably, Raducanu had a fairly good outing in the grass-court season as she made it to the semifinal of the Nottingham Open and reached the quarterfinal at the Eastbourne International. The Briton then also made it to the fourth round at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships, beating ninth seed Maria Sakkari in the third round.

Although she lost to qualifier Lulu Sun, Raducanu was happy about getting this far. Raducanu is now focused on making the most of the opportunity at the Citi Open. She opens her campaign at the WTA 500 tournament against Elise Mertens.

In case you missed it!
