The 11-month tennis calendar has ended, and those complaining about non-stop work have finally heaved a sigh of relief. The complainers of the schedule are mostly the top players, from both the WTA and the ATP.
Though players have the full freedom to skip tournaments, they are afraid of losing ranking points, and also they don’t want to miss out on the prize money that’s on offer. Emma Raducanu doesn’t have any problems with the hectic schedule, but she understands why her colleagues criticize the calendar.
I think that’s a challenge. I don’t necessarily think it’s something to complain about because it’s what we are given. And we are making a great living as well. I mean, it’s not all glamorous. There are definitely times when it’s very difficult, and we are flagging mentally, physically, and everything hurts. But at the same time, what are we going to do about it?

Men’s World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, with whom Raducanu played in the revamped mixed-doubles US Open this year, has time and again censured the calendar. He faces criticism a lot when he chooses to play the exhibitions, as critics argue that he needs to rest and recover instead of signing up for unofficial events. Alcaraz has often hit back at them and recently said that the exhibitions don’t bring stress, that he doesn’t have to maintain concentration.
I am sure there are certain people who go to work, and their bosses make them do something, but they have to do it; it’s their job. If we put up a front that isn’t complaining, I think that is a better example to the people watching, trying to get into tennis, the younger people. If they see all the top players moaning about the calendar, I don’t think that’s necessarily inspiring to look up to.

Raducanu was scheduled to play an exhibition alongside Alcaraz this month in the United States. But due to a foot niggle, the Brit decided to withdraw from it.
Emma Raducanu on working with physio Emma Stewart
Emma Raducanu started the season with fitness coach Yutaka Nakamura, but they ended the partnership midway through the season. Raducanu then hired acclaimed physio Emma Stewart, who also worked with the Great Britain men’s rowing team (also at the 2024 Paris Olympics). As per reports, Stewart will work as Raducanu’s physio but will also be responsible for the 23-year-old’s strength and conditioning.

I did some work with her in Madrid in 2022, and I always remembered she really helped me with my back at that time. In rowing, you see a lot of hips and backs…she knows how to treat it, it’s very helpful. Certain flare-ups that I’ve had, she’s helped me with.

Raducanu ended the season as World No.29 on the back of multiple deep runs. It’s her best ranking since August 2022, when Raducanu was the reigning US Open champion.
This season, Raducanu made the quarterfinals of the Miami Open- her best result since the 2021 US Open, as she was successful in winning four back-to-back matches in a row in a single tournament. Raducanu was last seen in action at the Ningbo Open, where her run was ended in her opening round at the hands of Zhu Lin.
In Grand Slam events this season, she failed to progress beyond the third round, reaching the stage at the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, while at the French Open, she lost in the second round. Her quarterfinal run at the Miami Open was her best performance in WTA 1000 events.
