The Jacksonville Jaguars shocked everyone this week as they signed their quarterback to a lucrative five-year deal worth $275 million. Although it’s everything that Trevor Lawrence wanted, many questioned if he truly deserved it.
Given, that the Jaguars couldn’t qualify for the playoffs after finishing the season at 9-8, the franchise made Lawrence one of the highest-paid quarterbacks. This made many analysts ridicule the new deal. Especially since this humongous contract has surpassed top NFL quarterbacks’ deals including Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.
While talking on the subject, analyst Emmanuel Acho claimed the only reason why the Jaguars gave such a huge deal to Lawrence is because of his promising performance at Clemson, on FS1’s SPEAK.
I believe that Trevor Lawrence is still getting paid off for what he did at Clemson. Trev's getting paid not because of what he's done in the NFL, he's getting paid because of what he did in Clemson.Emmanuel Acho said.
Acho was clear that you cannot pay a player $55 million a year just on the basis of some ‘flashes of brilliance’. He added that Lawrence lacks consistency.
Because what he did at Clemson allowed us to think about this marvelous upside– upside that we have not seen on a consistent basis we've seen it at times no doubt… we've seen flashes but you cannot pay a quarterback $55 million a year because of some flashes you got to pay him because of what he does consistently.Acho added.
The analyst emphasized that Lawrence was one of the most talented prospects during his draft and that’s why he has got a record-breaking deal close to the Bengals’ star Joe Burrow. He added if he had been drafted by the 49ers instead of the first overall pick, he probably would’ve been a backup.
Details about Trevor Lawrence’s $275 million deal
The $275 million deal signed by Lawrence will come into effect after the upcoming 2024-2025 season, as he is still on his rookie deal. This new deal includes a guaranteed money of $142 million and a $37.5 million signing bonus.
To reach the full $55 million a year, Lawrence would have to make extra efforts. Given, that it includes Pro Bowl, workout bonuses, and a few more performance incentives.
Despite being the No. 1 overall draft pick, Lawrence’s rookie season ended on a disastrous note, from which he recovered in his second year. In the last two seasons, he logged 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, while completing 66% of his passes.
