The Dallas Mavericks were completely dominated in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, losing 4-1. Despite possessing the likes of star players such as Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic, they still got outclassed by the Celtics’ roster in the NBA Finals. Notably, Irving of the Mavs had a poor NBA Finals series in particular and Emmanuel Acho did not let this go unnoticed as he slammed the NBA veteran on Fox Sports Show, “Speak.”
It is interesting to note that Irving had a wonderful first 3 rounds in the NBA Playoffs but dipped in performance in the NBA Finals against the Celtics. In the Finals, Irving averaged 19.8 ppg on 41.4% shooting in 5 games. Acho was wary of this and claimed on Speak that Irving let down his Mavericks’ side and also called him a “coward.” Acho also claimed that Irving chose the wrong time to find “himself.”
Kyrie Irving chose the wrong time to try to find himself...Where are the buckets, Kai? You averaged 14 points in the Garden, Kai. You shot 34% from the field in the Garden, Kai. You are the only Dallas Maverick that has won a championship. Yet, in the championship moments, you're a coward, Kai.On the Speak show by Fox Sports, Emmanuel Acho said
On the contrary, aside from Irving, the Mavs were poor in general in the defining Game 5 against the Celtics. Apart from Doncic, not one Mavs player managed to reach the 20-point mark in the game. It remains to be seen now how the Mavs bounce back from this harsh setback and come back in the next 2024-25 NBA season.
Kyrie Irving had a poor outing against Celtics in Game 5 loss
Kyrie Irving is one of the best players the Dallas Mavericks have on their roster alongside Luka Doncic. However, Irving did not perform up to expectations in the 2024 NBA Finals. Also, in the crucial Game 5 matchup, he had a poor shooting night, possibly costing his current side, the Mavs the NBA title this season.
In 41 minutes, Irving only managed 15 points on 5 of 16 shooting, nine assists, and three rebounds. In three of the five games, he was restricted to fewer than 20 points, and his 3-point percentage was only 27.6%. Generally speaking, Irving was poor in most of the five NBA Finals games.
In addition, Irving was booed by Celtics supporters a lot during this series. After departing the team as a free agent in 2019, he became one of Boston sports’ most infamous villains. In the end, the Celtics prevailed over Irving on the largest stage of the sport to win their first title since 2008.
