The Philadelphia Eagles had not entirely been running on a strong quarterback at the centre of all operations. The Eagles’ signal caller, Jalen Hurts, threw just under 3000 yards while rushing for 600 yards, not equal to the likes of several others who crossed the threshold of 4000 passing yards.

However, Jalen Hurts did come up big on the showdown, the Super Bowl LIX. He delivered a stellar performance, throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns, earning a 119.7 passer rating, the 14th highest in Super Bowl history.

His efficiency was further highlighted by 10.0 yards per attempt, ranking 10th all-time, and an impressive 77.3% completion rate, the fifth best in a Super Bowl. With the numbers, it was a bit shocking when an ESPN poll of NFL executives, coaches, and scouts ranked Hurts at ninth. The surprisingly low ranking wasn’t taken lightly by many, including FS1 pundit Emmanuel Acho.

In the recent episode of The Facility, Acho lamented the fact that Jalen Hurts is not included in the top five:

To me, it’s absolutely asinine that Jalen Hurts is not in the top five… Bare minimum top six. And for me, it’s very simple: Jalen Hurts wins at a high clip… You can’t just tell me, ‘Well, Jalen Hurts has such a good team.’ There have been a lot of good teams that fall short, and been a lot of good teams where the quarterback isn’t Super Bowl MVP.

Acho pointed out the four quarterbacks who are ranked way higher than they should be. He pointed out that Jayden Daniels (R5) had only one strong rookie season, while Matthew Stafford (R6) is aging with similar accolades to Hurts. The former Super Bowl champion has the same number of Pro Bowl mentions as Hurts, while the latter has an SB MVP.

Acho added that the seventh and eighth-ranked quarterbacks, Justin Herbert and Jared Goff, respectively, have weak playoff resumes. Herbert has played just two playoff games, both of which he lost. Meanwhile, Goff has gone 4-5 despite having equally strong offensive support as Hurts.

Patrick Mahomes led the list as the gap continues to narrow

The ESPN poll highlighted a golden era in the NFL, led by a historically strong Tier 1 featuring four elite QBs in their prime, all aged 28–29, with five MVPs combined. Patrick Mahomes led the list, but his lead is considerably decreasing, as critics start to point out in negation of his fortress position.

The field is more exclusive than ever, with only 12 quarterbacks receiving serious consideration. The poll also underscored that there’s a shift toward younger quarterbacks, highlighted by the absence of 4-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. There was only one quarterback over the age of 30 in the top 10, Matthew Stafford.

Here’s the list of the Top 10 quarterbacks with the honorable mentions as ranked by the league’s insiders.

Among the top ten, only Herbert, Goff, and Mayfield haven’t led their teams to a conference championship game before. In a league with constant change and evolution, the poll has highlighted a sharp focus on postseason performance and a shift towards potential rather than legacy.
