As much as winning a medal at the Olympic Games is glorified, there exists a darker side filled with tears of athletes, who despite their best efforts didn’t suffer the unfortunate fate of finishing outside the medal positions. Romania’s Ana Barbosu seemed to have suffered a similar fate at the Paris Olympics this year.
While American Jordan Chiles felt tears of joy after securing a bronze medal to her name at the Paris Olympics, Barbosu was seen shedding bitter tears after failing to hold her country’s flag among the champions. The scoreboard initially placed the Romanian gymnast in the third position but the minute she began celebrating for securing a medal, it was found she actually finished fourth.
As Chiles got to know about her score, she jumped up in excitement and was seen hugging the legendary gymnast Simone Biles. But Barbosu broke down into tears on live television after losing a medal in the women’s floor exercise final at the Paris Olympics.
After the inquiry, Barbosu’s score changed from 13.666 to 13.766 and Chiles won her first individual medal in her Olympic career. The 18-year-old covered her face as tears ran down her cheeks and had to be consoled while she walked off the floor.
By winning a bronze for Team Romania in gymnastics, Barbosu had the opportunity to secure the first and only medal in her country’s Olympic medal in gymnastics. But as she finished fourth, she lost her chance.
Ana Barbosu aside, Rebeca Andrade claims gold as Simone Biles takes silver
While Chiles secured the bronze by finishing at the third position, the gymnastics G.O.A.T finished at the second position and secured her first silver medal at the Paris Olympics this year. Although she already won three gold medals, this was the first-floor exercise where Biles didn’t clinch a gold.
Meanwhile, Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade won the gold in the women’s floor exercise and USA’s Suni Lee finished at the sixth position. During Biles’ routine, though it was mesmerizing like always, she stumbled at the time of landing on Biles I.
This was the first time since 2000 that Team USA didn’t secure the top rank at a women’s beam final in an Olympic Games. But the legendary gymnast claimed that she was not too upset about it because she has accomplished a lot and doesn’t want to affect her mental health because of it again.
