Nick Kyrgios has not given up yet it seems as the practice session with Novak Djokovic has boosted his confidence. The Aussie and Djokovic met on Friday to practice before the latter’s third-round match at Wimbledon. 

Kyrgios underwent knee and wrist surgery which forced him to contemplate retirement. He has played just one match (2023 Stuttgart Open) since October 2022 and took up commentary duties for different channels. After the practice session with Djokovic, an emotional Kyrgios took to his Instagram to share a positive update on his fitness.

Nearly 10 months since my brutal wrist surgery… First real test today and it almost brought me to tears the fact that I’ve been able to get back to this level - There were periods that maybe it wasn’t meant to be - Novak told me today that he couldn’t tell that I’d had the surgery… My team and I had to reflect on all the moments when s**t got hard… We keep going.

Djokovic and Krygios shared a brutal rivalry before it turned into a ‘bromance’ thanks to the Aussie’s support of Nole during the 2022 Australian Open, where the Serb was deported a day before the start of the event for not being vaccinated against COVID-19.

Novak Djokovic empathizes with Nick Kyrgios 

Novak Djokovic came to Wimbledon after nursing a knee injury he suffered during last month’s Roland Garros which forced him to pull out of the quarterfinals. And though he underwent surgery, it took him just some weeks to come to the SW19 to practice.

He was uncertain at first whether to play or not but finally made the decision at the last moment. He did not struggle at all against his first-round opponent Vit Kopriva, winning it with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. After the match, he talked about players, including Nick Kyrgios, dealing with injury issues that are ruining their careers. 

As an athlete, I empathize with Nick and anyone who’s struggling. It’s tough, you almost feel helpless at times that something isn’t allowing you to come back to what you love most, and you’re unable to do your profession for years. 
Novak Djokovic said after his first-round win 

Kyrgios is one of those players who have a lead over Djokovic in their head-to-head meetings (2-1). Their last meeting was at the 2022 Wimbledon final, which the Serb won in four sets.
