Rafael Nadal is one of the greatest champions in tennis history. In 2020, the Spaniard bagged his 13th Roland Garros title after a disappointing run at the Italian Open. Rafa maintains his usual-top notch form, which is in part due to his coach, Carlos Moya. Nadal has won 6 Grand Slam titles and 7 Masters 1000 titles under Moya’s supervision.

Former World No.1 himself, Moya has been with Rafa since 2016. Whilst Carlos has revealed that he receives criticism if Nadal fails to succeed, “the one who suffers the most is the player.”

For this take, Moya has cited that “it is Rafa who has to make decisions. Go through bad times if necessary. And always be well to compete.”

In an interview with Libertad Digital, Moya also shed light on the relationship he has with Rafa. This close bond is the reason why he is on edge if Nadal finds himself in a pickle on or off the court.

“We have a friendship-relationship since he was only 11 years old. I know his family, his close circle. That emotional part makes you suffer more,” stated Moya emotionally.

Nadal failed to claim his maiden Nitto ATP Finals title this year. He did not succeed to move past Dominic Thiem at the semi-finals. While this loss was a straight-sets one, it included two extremely tight tie-breaks.

Carlos remarked that the close defeats were the root of his frustration or anger. It was painful for him to see things not work out for Rafa. “Where you see everything that he has worked, readapted, and improved in his game to get the title. It gives you more anger that for a few details he could not win it,” he concluded.
