The UEFA Champions League got underway on Tuesday night as defending champions Real Madrid took to the pitch. The Los Blancos were up against Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart for their opening game, which they ended up winning by a comfortable margin of three goals to one. As Madrid held on a 2-1 lead in the dying minutes, new signing Endrick stunned the crowd with a spectacular finish.
18-year-old Endrick made headlines earlier this week after announcing his marriage with girlfriend Gabriely Miranda. As the newlywed played his first game since the announcement, it only took him less than fifteen minutes to find the net. Replacing Jude Bellingham, Endrick found himself leading a counter with both Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. as options.
However, the crowd was surprised when the Brazilian let fly from afar, as his grounded shot grazed the turf before hitting Alexander Nubel‘s outstretch arm. However, the shot was too powerful to be kept out, as the final score read 3-1.
Fans also pointed out how Mbappe didn’t seem ‘too pleased’ about the goal, as replays showed him ‘complaining’ about not being passed to as the ball went in.
Real Madrid ‘survive’ first-half against Stuttgart to claim 3-1 victory in UCL opener
The reigning champions of Europe were in action as the UCL returned for the 2024/25 edition. However, despite adding Kylian Mbappe, Endrick and Jude Bellingham to their ranks, it wasn’t smooth sailing for the Los Blancos. The first half almost saw the club go 3-0 down, as Thibaut Courtois single-handedly kept out multiple goal bound strikes in the opening 45 minutes.
After withstanding the storm, Real Madrid finally found the breakthrough through Mbappe, who had the easy job of tapping the ball into an empty net courtesy of Rodrygo‘s generous assist. Deniz Undav lifted the roof with an emphatic equalizer, only for Antonio Rudiger to head in the goal that would take them ahead again.
A last-minute free kick for the visitors proved to be their undoing as Endrick picked up the ball in his own half before finishing off the counter-attack in style. Following the game, boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted that Stuttgart made it difficult for them in the first half, but his side gradually managed to find their way back into the game. He also said that there was ‘no surprise’ as to the result, to which fans on social media appeared to agree with.
